The high side is on, depending on the definition, 52 to 63 sq km more engaging natural space of Rothaargebirge in the local area of the cities Medebach (Gemarkungen Kuestelberg , Medebach and Medelon ), winter mountain (Gemarkungen Elkeringhausen , winter mountain and Zuschen ) and Hall Berg (Gemarkungen Hesborn , Liesen and to minimal proportions Hallenberg), Hochsauerlandkreis , North Rhine-Westphalia . It is characterized by high-opening mountains in the immediate vicinity of Medebach Bay , of which the Bollerberg ( 757.9 m ), the main mountain of the south wing, is the most striking and best-known. The highest mountain in the entire natural area is the Reetsberg ( 791.6 m ) in the north wing, followed by the Schlossberg ( 790.8 m ) in the extreme north of the same. The Upper Orketal of the Orke with the Elkeringhausen Basin and the Vildischen Grund lies between the two wings . The most south- westerly sub-natural area is the Züschener Nuhnekessel with the valleys of the Nuhne and its source streams, which separates the actual high side from the massifs of the Kahler Asten (up to 842 m ) in the north-west and the Ziegenhelle (up to 815.9 m ) in the south-west.
The nature reserves Glindfeld Forest Reserve (Medebach) (21.52 km²) and Glindfeld Forest Reserve (Winterberg) (2.10 km²) take up a large part of the montane area of the natural area. There are also nature reserves on individual mountains and in the entire upper Orketal plus a few more small ones.
location
The hilltop forest area extends between Hallenberg in the south, Winterberg in the west, Küstelberg in the north and Medebach in the east. The hamlets of Glindfeld , Medelon , Hesborn and Liesen are located on the south-eastern edge between Medebach and Hallenberg, whose core towns are somewhat distant ; Züschen in the south-west and Elkeringhausen in the north-west are the only places that lie within the natural area. Outside the Züschner Kessel with the federal road 236 Hallenberg – Winterberg and the state road 721 to Neuastenberg are the Elkeringhausen district road 50 (from Winterberg to shortly before Elkeringhausen: Hochsauerland-Hähenstraße ) and the state road 740 from Küstelberg to Medebach ( there also Hochsauerland-Höhenstraße ) the only long-distance roads that pass the natural area.
Natural allocation and structure
The high side was designated and delimited as a natural area by Martin Bürgener in the natural spatial structure 1: 200,000 on sheet 111 Arolsen in 1963; their sub-natural spaces have not received their own indicators, but are described (and their limits self-explanatory):

In the Hardt, near Bürgener western part of the unit 332.50 Hardt and Wipperberg , the north wing of the Hohe Seite, along with its main ridge, flows over at the watershed between Mittelorke and Wilder Aa, and the nature reserve Glindfeld (Medebach) forest reserve extends on the Hesseberg ( 596.2 m ) in there. Bürgener saw it as part of the “Grafschafter Bergland” around the Grafschafter Chamber (335.51), which is connected to the north. However, the Grafschafter Chamber and all other parts of the Grafschafter Bergland drain to the Wilder Aa , while, apart from the Schlossberg and the northern slope of the Reetsberg, the north wing of the Hohe Seite drains to the central Orke. In the area of the Hardt, the watershed between Mittelorke and Aa coming from the Reetsberg lies clearly on the northern flank, which is why this part of the natural area drains almost completely to the Mittelorke in the Medebach Inclined Plane via Gelängebach , Medebach and Brühne . The Hallebach flowing towards the Wilder Aa therefore only flanks the natural area , apart from its headwaters on the north slope of the Reetsberg.
In terms of altitude, the Hardt at the Wahlkopf reaches the Rothaargebirge heights at 630.5 m, and the 600 m at 594.4 m are only just missed on the Hardt mountain in the far east , while on the Heimberg to the east it is only 537.7 m , on the Wipperberg to the east behind it can also be reached by 540 m , as they are more characteristic of the eastern Sauerland mountain range . The Hardt is only geologically different from the north wing of the High Side (see below).
Züschener Nuhnekessel
The Züschener Nuhnekessel occupying about 10 km² on the federal road 236 from Hallenberg via Züschen , where the state road branches off to Mollseifen and Neuastenberg , to Winterberg , as a densely developed traffic area, has as little to do with the actual Hohe Seite as it does with the massifs of Kahlem Asten and Ziegenhelle that he separates from each other. It has more in common with the natural areas of Winterberger Hochmulde (Harfeld), Langewiese and Hallenberger Hügelland , which it connects with each other. From Langewiese at Mollseifen at about 640 m it follows the Berkmecke and finally the Ahre , from the Winterberger southwest the Nuhne upper course there and finally the Sonneborn to the junction at about 463 m in Züschen; The valley of the Oberahre, buried in the Ziegenhelle massif, also belongs in part to the basin. Between Züschen and the exit of the Nuhne from the Rothaargebirge in the north of Hallenberg (mouth of the Liese at around 401 m ), the valley narrows significantly and the bottom slope decreases to around 1.02%, while the Sonneborn from the meeting on the main road to Vereinigung zur Nuhne had made an average of 1.76%, exactly like the Berkmecke and the Ahre lower reaches in the analogous section on the state road.
South wing
The fuselage of the approximately 17 km² south wing, but not the highest, let alone most prominent mountain there, is the Hohe Seite mountain ( 752.5 m ), which over the Lagerstein ( 732.6 m ) further west-southwest connection to the Winterberg plateau (Harfeld) has, where at about 660 m also the ridge of the ridge to the Kahler Asten lies.
The high side, which is also called Großer Bromberg , merges to the southeast into the Kleiner Bromberg ( 683.8 m ), the Lagerstein into a longer Riedel ( Großer ( 683.7 m ) and Kleiner Niggenberg ( 628.3 m ), Schling ( 658.1 m ) and Wacht ( 642.8 m )), which the Liese valley separates from Bromberg. A lower floor is reached between the large and small Niggenberg (notch at 613.2 m ) and between the large and small Bromberg ( notch at 656.6 m ). All the more imposing rises, south-east of the Kleiner Bromberg and separated from it by a notch at 633 m , the Bollerberg , which is set off by recent erosion and made of sand-lime stone , the 757.9 m high, which is horizontally 660 meters high in the south-west Distance approaching Liesetal towers an impressive 242 m , the core village of Hesborns , one and a half kilometers to the southeast, on the Olfe, which rises on the Bollerberg southeast slope, by up to 300 m . To the south of a notch at 590.5 m , the southernmost Bollerberg pre-summit Hilmesberg ( 634.6 m ) joins on the lowest floor .
On the Niggenbergsriedel south beyond the peaks listed there is a deeper notch (at 552.7 m ), to the south-east of which in the Sellerberg ( 672.6 m ) and in the Steinschab ( 646.2 m ) distinctive single ridges of the Medebach Bay rise up.
Only the north-east slopes of Bollerberg and Hoher Seite are in the Medebach area, still in the nature reserve Glindfeld (Medebach) , the northern slope of the Hohe Seite in the corresponding Winterberger NSG . This NSG will not be continued in the Hallenberg area, but there is in particular the Hilmesberg nature reserve there .
The mountains east of the Bollerberg represent a natural borderline case. The main watershed leads, nominally already in the Hallenberg hill country , over a 641.2 m high knoll and the approximately 624 m high Stolzenberg , first into the low cleared open land, then back into the main forest with the Stemmberg ( 572.2 m ) and the Linsenberg ( 566.6 m ), which is already interrupted on the southern slope of the Stemmberg ( Stemmberg nature reserve ) and at the foot of the Linsenberg. The NSG forest reserve Glindfeld ends to the right of the Orketal immediately behind the state road 617 Medelon –Hesborn and the valley of the Dormecke , which separate the Stemmberg. To the south, in the transition area between forest and open land, it goes over into the nature reserve Am Dasseberg .
Stemmberg and Linsenberg reach heights between those of the Rothaargebirge (over 600 m ) and those of the Hallenberger Hügelland (around 500 m ); Although they reach the height of the edge heights of the north wing (Bollenberg, Bocksberg), but at a certain distance from the last 600 m. The Stolzenberg, on the other hand, towers noticeably above the 600 m , but lies southeast across a clear depression and is only narrowly forested like a peninsula.
Upper Orketal
The Upper Orketal , which occupies around 5 km², consists of the Elkeringhausen basin around Elkeringhausen and the Vildischen Grund in the adjoining narrow Orke valley through the forest cover on the high side up to Medelon .
The Elkeringhausen Basin is a depression and the only settlement area on the Hohe Seite outside of the Züschen basin. The valley floor is about two hundred meters below the edge of the Winterberger Hochmulde ( Böhl : 721.7 m , Ruhrkopf : 696.3 m ) and almost three hundred meters below the northern heights of the Hohe Seite ( Reetsberg : 791.6 m , Alte Grimme : 755, 1 m ). District road 50, an alternative section of the Hochsauerland high road , leads to the high places of Winterberg and Küstelberg , which are around 150 meters higher .
The nature reserve grassland complex upper Orke lies on the Elkeringhauser district , which surrounds the village from the northeast. In the village itself there is a small lake (pond) immediately to the left of the Orke.
Shortly before the valley narrowing to the Vildischen Grund, the Orke enters Winterberger district and it flows from the right, from the direction of Winterberg, at 478 m the Helle with the nature reserves Schluchtwald Helle and Unteres Helletal . Immediately above the lower Helletals is at 535.1 m of Lake .
In the Vildischen Grund, on the Winterberger side, the Orke valley is protected by the Winterberger Orketalsystem nature reserve , which begins at the Orketal above the Helle estuary and also contains various side valleys on the right. Left Orkish, it contains the right-hand (western) lower valley of the Deutmecke on the city limits of Medebach .
The Orketal nature reserve on the Medebach side is limited to the Orketal itself; it also continues outside the Vildischen Grund and is only interrupted within the urban area in the village of Medelon.
North wing
The fuselage of the approximately 20 km² north wing of the high side is undoubtedly the ridge of the 791.6 m high Reetsberg with west summit Rösberg ( 785.7 m ) and south -east summit Junge Grimme ( 782.1 m ), which extends broadly in west-east direction which are at least 1400 meters as the crow flies, ridge line 1450 meters apart, while the distance is not less than 761.6 m . Its northern flank flattens gradually towards Küstelberg ( Großer Höcherkopf at a distance of 550 meters: 760.8 m ; Rötzberg at a distance of almost 1000 meters north-northwest: 721 m ), while on the southern slope to the "Giebel" it drops by 100 m at 700 horizontal meters , to the side valleys to the west and east of the gable it is still significantly deeper (drop from 760 m to 560 m in 500 horizontal meters).
Southwest to the Rösberg closes beyond a 681.5 m deep notch the Alte Grimme ( 755.1 m boys Grimme), southeast behind a 666.5 m deep notch of with 705.5 m already significantly lower Geitenberg . Westward past the north slope that drains over the Hallebach to the Wilder Aa and past Küstelberg you finally reach the 694.9 m high notch on the state road Küstelberg - Medebach ( Hochsauerland-Höhenstraße ), which is almost equal in this respect with 790.8 m , strikingly domed Schlossberg , the northern corner pillar of the high side.
In addition to the Geitenberg, the lower floor is occupied by the sandstone and quartzite ridge of the winter box ( 662.5 m ) in the extreme south-east, separated by a gap to 548.2 m . In the direction of Medelon, the even flatter mountains Bollenberg ( 765.8 m , south-southeast) and Bocksberg ( 568.9 m , east-southeast) are in front of it.
Almost all of the mountains in the Unter-Naturraum are in the nature reserve Waldreservat Glindfeld (Medebach) , the Rösberg-West slopes in the Winterberger counterpart . Only small parts of the northern slopes of Reetsberg and Rösberg and, in the Elkeringhäuser district, the Alte Grimme and the castle in front of it to the northwest ( 617.2 m ) are left out. However, the NSG Alte Grimme is located on the western slope of the Alte Grimme , to which the NSG Ronsfeld connects to the west . On the western edge of the Ronsfeld, on the border to the west, on the Orkehang, the re-emerging forest, at a fork in the road is the gap between Grimme and Burg at 548.6 m .
Hardt
The approximately 11 km² large Hardt (without Heimberg), for allocation to the high side see above , continues the north wing of the high side to the northeast. At the Hallacker Pass over the hamlet of Hallacker , the geological boundary runs between the rocks of the Devonian (especially Fredeburg slate, Eifelium) and the younger rocks of the Karbon (Medebach group with Grauwacken ). The gap between the Geitenberg ( 705.5 m ) and the Wahlkopf ( 630.5 m ) lies at 547.3 m on the state road Küstelberg - Medebach ( Hochsauerland-Höhenstraße ) west of the hamlet directly on this geological border, which is close by from here the Hallebach (to the Wilden Aa ) to the northeast and the Gelängebach (to the central Orke ) to the southeast.
Geomorphologically, the geological transition is inconspicuous. The ridge rising from the Geitenberg to the north-northeast gradually turns to the east-northeast, goes over the Feltebelberg ( 585.2 m ), deepens again on a ridge to 533 m , to reach another 594.4 m on the Hardt . From here the watershed extends to the southeast in the flat wavelength Medebacher bay (for 508.1 m high Valshagen ), while the Hardt crest beyond the local sub-natural space framing country road to Oberschledorn (col to about 471 m ) in 537.8 m high Heimberg continues with a significant loss of altitude.
The only slightly higher Böhlen ( 586.7 m , Scharte at 555.2 m ) lies just 400 meters south-southeast of the Feltebel . The Bromberg ( 557.3 m , gap to Wahlkopf at 493.9 m ) south of the Böhlen and northwest of Medebach as well as the Hesseberg ( 597 m , gap to Wahlkopf at 509.4 m ) west-southwest of the Bromberg and immediately north of the Weilers Glindfeld .
The Hesseberg is the only mountain in the sub-natural area south of the state road Küstelberg – Medebach and, like almost the entire north wing of the Hohe Seite, in the nature reserve Glindfeld Forest Reserve (Medebach) . The Böhlen is the sponsor of the NSG Böhlen , on the Großer Steinberg , a southern summit of the Wahlkopf, the small NSG Großer Steinberg is located on the southwest slope . On the western slope of the Bromberg there is the multi-part small NSG Bromberg-Steinbrüche , while the mountain on the southeast slope is better known as the "Spiel-Berg"; Here, in close proximity to the Medebach residential areas, there is a small leisure park open all year round.

The "TIM online" service ( "Topographical Information Management ..." ) is primarily referenced where it provides information that is not available in most publicly accessible services through switchable services (water stationing, German basemap , contour lines / points) . The heights of the notches come from the basemap (until 2016) or the contour lines / points; most of the mountain heights have been updated on a coarser scale since that map and are usually somewhat higher than the old figures.
