The Harzer Hexenstieg (official spelling: Harzer Hexen-Stieg ) is a nearly 100 km long hiking trail that leads from Osterode through the Harz over the Brocken to Thale . In addition, two alternative routes are offered: on the one hand the Brocken bypass from Torfhaus via St. Andreasberg and Braunlage (32.3 km), on the other hand the Köhler path south of the Rappbodetalsperre from Königshütte via Hasselfelde (23.8 km). The total route network is 152 km. It is a project of the Harz Tourism Association and the Harz Club and is included in the system of the Harz hiking pin with 28 stamp points and its own themed badge . The quality hiking trail, certified since 2007, connects the federal states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt and leads through the districts of Göttingen, Goslar and Harz. The Hexenstieg crosses the Harz National Park between Altenau and Drei-Annen-Hohne . In 2009 Hexenstieg was a founding member of the Top Trails of Germany marketing cooperation . In autumn 2013 the central German long-distance hiking trail celebrated its tenth anniversary.
description
The Hexenstieg leads from Osterode via Lerbach to Buntenbock , a district of Clausthal-Zellerfeld surrounded by the Upper Harz ponds . The Oberharzer ponds are part of the Oberharzer water shelf , which also includes the dam ditch . Following this, the path passes the Dammhaus and the Grabenhaus Rose, which belongs to Altenau . Passing Förster-Ludwig-Platz and Nabentaler waterfall, the path over the steep wall reaches Torfhaus . The official route of the Hexenstieges between Förster-Ludwig-Platz and Torfhaus, Magdeburger Weg , has been closed for an indefinite period since 2017. The diversion takes place over the Buttersteig over the Wolfswarte to the Torfhaus.
In Torfhaus, the Hexenstieg splits into the Goetheweg, which takes the main route to the Brocken, partly parallel to the Brockenbahn and from there to Königshütte . An alternative route bypasses the Brocken and leads to other facilities of the Upper Harz water reserve such as the Oderteich and the Rehberger Graben . The path returns to the main route via Sankt Andreasberg and Braunlage .
Two alternative routes lead from Königshütte to Altenbrak . One path goes over Rübeland along the Rübelandbahn , the other runs past the Rappbode dam . From Altenbrak the route continues via Treseburg, where the Bode-Selke-Stieg branches off, to Thale , where the Harzer Hexenstieg ends. The section between Treseburg and Thale is closed in the winter months between November and March due to the increased risk of falling rocks. The signposted diversion of the Harzer Hexenstieg takes place via the Weißen Hirsch, the arrow monument up to the Hexentanzplatz in Thale.
The name of the hiking trail is derived from the fact that in addition to the Brocken and the Hexentanzplatz in Thale, other mystical sites such as the Bruchberg or Braunlage are passed.
Accommodations
The hike along the Harz Hexenstieg is by no means accomplished in one day. In view of the many sights along the way, this is not even the point of the hike. This leads through untouched nature as well as through old cultural landscapes and communities. There are therefore a number of hostels and backpacking accommodations for a stopover:
or
Alternatively, the shelters and resin typical can Köten be used for a night on the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg. Only on the section in the Harz National Park is this not allowed.
