NGC 1412 = IC 1981 is a lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is an estimated 75 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter . Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair together with PGC 13529 .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 1398 .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on November 20, 1835 .
