The Kalashnikov Concern -Werke in Izhevsk ( Russian ИЖМАШ - Ижевский машиностроительный завод - Isch ewski Masch inostroitelny zavod) is a Russian manufacturer of weapons and vehicles. They have been part of the Kalashnikov Group since 2013 .

history

The establishment of the plant goes back to 1807. During the Napoleonic Wars , Tsar Alexander I ordered the establishment of an iron foundry on the Isch River . Anchors for Russian ships and cannons were later cast there. Since then, Izhevsk has been a center for the manufacture of infantry weapons alongside Tula . During the two world wars millions of Mosin-Nagant rifles were manufactured here.

From 1946, the DKW factory's motorcycle production facilities, which had previously been dismantled in Zschopau, Saxony , were rebuilt in the Ischmasch works and used to manufacture the IZH-350 motorcycle, which was identical to the DKW NZ 350. This was further developed into the IZH-49 by 1951 . Rifles followed in 1949, which were developed by well-known designers such as Mikhail Kalashnikov and Yevgeny Dragunov . In addition, the group produces aircraft on-board weapons for the Grjasew-Schipunow design office . Ischmasch is particularly well-known within Russia as a manufacturer of motorcycles and cars of the ISCH or IZH (Russian ИЖ) brands . The manufacture of motorcycles began as early as 1928, and a total of more than eleven million copies were made.

In September 2009, Ischmasch had to file for bankruptcy as a result of the 2007 financial crisis . The Taganroger Automobilwerk, on the other hand, became independent in 1998 and continues to produce automobiles. The current vehicles from Ischmasch production can be recognized in the vehicle identification number by the manufacturer code X6L .

On April 10, 2013, the previous general director of Ischmasch, Vladimir Grodezki, was arrested. He is accused of embezzlement .

Products from Ischmasch

The company offers civil versions of the AK family under the Saiga brand . While the brand's share of total production was 50 percent in 2010, it had already reached 70 percent in 2012. 40 percent of the civil versions are exported to the USA. American buyers buy about as many versions of the Kalashnikov as the Russian military and the Russian police combined.
