James Patrick "Jim" O'Brien (born January 29, 1989 in Maplewood , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Nürnberg Ice Tigers in the German Ice Hockey League since June 2019 and is in the position of Centers plays.
Career
O'Brien belonged between 2004 and 2006 to the National Team Development Program of the US hockey association USA Hockey , for which he played the following two seasons nationally in the North American Hockey League , but also represented it internationally. The defense attorney then enrolled at the University of Minnesota and tried to pursue a degree. In parallel, he played for the college's ice hockey team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After the 2006/07 season he was selected in the first round in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in 29th place by the Ottawa Senators from the National Hockey League . The striker then left the university prematurely and moved to the Canadian junior league Western Hockey League . There he spent the two seasons until the spring of 2009 before signing a contract with the Ottawa Senators. In their farm team Binghamton Senators from the American Hockey League , he spent the rest of the 2008/09 season .
With the beginning of the 2009/10 season O'Brien was an integral part of the roster of the Binghamton Senators and only made it into the Ottawas NHL roster during the 2010/11 season . He also won the Calder Cup with Binghamton that season . Overall, he remained in the franchise until the end of the 2013/14 game year , but did not manage to establish himself as a regular player in the NHL during the five years. There were only 63 NHL games for him.
The striker moved to Europe in summer 2014 in search of a new challenge. He signed a contract with Metallurg Novokuznetsk from the Continental Hockey League . His engagement there ended at the end of December of the same year after only 22 missions. O'Brien then returned to North America and came under for the remainder of the season with the Hershey Bears in the AHL. In the summer of 2015 he signed a contract with the New Jersey Devils from the NHL as a free agent , but where he was excellent with the Albany Devils in the AHL.
After a year with the San Antonio Rampage , he joined the Belleville Senators in October . Their NHL cooperation partners, the Ottawa Senators, gave him a two-year contract in February 2018. He fulfilled this and then moved to the Nürnberg Ice Tigers in June 2019 .
International
For his home country, O'Brien played in the junior division at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2005 , the U18 World Junior Championships in 2006 and 2007 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2009 . At the World U-17 Hockey Challenge and U20 Junior World Championship, the striker finished fifth and thus outside the medal ranks. The two U18 Junior World Championships were all the more successful. In 2006, the Americans won the gold medal after beating Finland 3-1. To win the world title, O'Brien contributed four scorer points in six matches. There were three gates below. In the following year, the US boys just failed to defend their title when they only lost to Russia 5-6 in the final. As part of the tournament, the attacker contributed just as many points to the silver medal win in seven games.
