Johannes Ufer (born April 30, 1912 in Essen , † January 4, 1987 in Hamburg ) was a German painter , sculptor and spatial and surface artist of the lost generation .

Life

After attending primary school in Bochum and moving to Berlin, Johannes Ufer learned the painting trade from 1926 . From 1928 he worked as a theater painter and attended the United State Schools for Free and Applied Arts , where he was a student of César Klein . With a state scholarship mediated by Käthe Kollwitz and Max Liebermann , he studied from 1929 to 1933 at the arts and crafts school in Berlin-Charlottenburg with Willi Breest (1891–1952), Max Deri and Kurt Wehlte . On March 28, 1933, he completed the state examination for teachers . From 1933 to 1945 he did not exhibit any of his works. From 1937 to 1940 he stayed in Copenhagen .

From 1945 he worked as a freelance artist in Hamburg. He became a member of the artist group Hamburger Gruppe founded by Martin Irwahn and Richard Steffen in 1945 , which also included Willi Breest, Ernst Flege (1898–1965), Tom Hops , Fritz Husmann (1896–1982), Peter Luksch (1901–1988, son by Richard Luksch and Elena Luksch-Makowsky ), Max Hermann Mahlmann , Hanns Müller-Dünwald (1900–1955), Franz Nespethal (1912–1993), Kurt Priegnitz (also Kurth and Prignitz , 1914–1983), Hermann Schütte (1893– 1973), Walter Siebelist , KRH Sonderborg , Hildegard Stromberger (1904–1985) and Ernst Witt (1901–1977). In 1953 he ended his membership of the Hamburg group in 1945 . In addition, he belonged to the constructivist artist community the group and the professional association of visual artists Hamburg . In 1946 he opened his gallery Mosaikwerkstätten - Junge Kunst at Neuer Wall 36 in Hamburg-Neustadt . In 1948 he became a lecturer in the subject space and area art at Hamburg Baukreis . One of his students was the painter Lore Brand (born March 7, 1923 in Hamburg), whom he married soon afterwards and who supported him in his public commissions from 1952. From 1974 he was also supported by their son Michael Ufer. From 1949 he was listed in the telephone directory of the Hamburg address book as a painter at Sierichstrasse 54 in Hamburg-Winterhude , and later as a spatial and surface artist . In 1958 he moved with his family to Andreasstrasse 11 in Winterhude.

In 1952, together with Arnold Fiedler from Baukreis, he created the set for the opera The Rake's Progress , which was performed in the Hamburg State Opera . Nine stage brochures were created in which they converted music and recitative , tempos and sound figures of the dramatic piece into non-representational compositions that took up the basic moods of the scenes. In 1955 Arnold Fiedler was commissioned to create a mural for the exterior facade of the Othmarscher Kirchenweg 145 school in Hamburg-Othmarschen , where Loki Schmidt worked as a teacher from 1949 to 1962, and which was renamed the Loki Schmidt School in August 2012 . In cooperation with Johannes Ufer, a 3-part mosaic was created from colored glazed ceramic plates on the subject of fire, water, air .

In 1955, Johannes Ufer was also commissioned to paint the houses to be rebuilt on Heligoland . He developed a color spectrum of 14 colors, choosing more delicate tones for the Oberland and strong tones for the Unterland. The colors were decisive on Heligoland until the 1980s. One result is the colorful lobster booths at the harbor, which are under monument protection. He also designed the facades of many houses in the Neuwiedenthal housing estate in Hamburg-Hausbruch and Hamburg-Neugraben-Fischbek . In Neuwiedenthal-Süd, small ceramic tiles from Johannes Ufers mosaic workshops adorned all the house facades, which gradually disappear under the thermal insulation of new facades that meet the requirements of climate protection . In other parts of the city he also designed house facades, which probably have a similar fate. For the facades of the residential buildings of the Süderelbe eG housing cooperative in Neuwiedenthal, Johannes and Lore Ufer created tile murals with herons as motifs, which are the cooperative's logo.

Due to his knowledge of materials and his knowledge of the processing options of the materials, he was also artistic advisor to companies such as Villeroy & Boch , Steine und Erden Salith Salzgitter and Flügger Farben .
