Jonathan Simon Speelman (born October 2, 1956 in London ) is an English chess master .

Life

Speelman, alongside Tony Miles one of the most talented hopes in chess in England in the 1970s, became International Master in 1978 and Grandmaster in 1980 . He won the British Championship in 1978, 1985 and 1986. In 1984 he won the zonal tournament in Brighton with Nigel Short and qualified for the first time for the interzonal tournament in Taxco in 1985, in which he was fourth and narrowly missed the leap into the Candidates Tournament . In 1986 he played a match against the US American Lew Alburt in London 4: 4 (+2 = 4 −2). In 1986/87 he shared 1st to 4th place at the traditional tournament in Hastings with Smbat Lputjan , Murray Chandler and Bent Larsen .

At the end of the 1980s, a serious eye condition that Speelman had playfully impaired was successfully cured and he managed to reach the peak of his career.

In 1987 he won the zone tournament in Bath with 9 points from 10 games , ahead of Glenn Flear and Jonathan Mestel . Together with Viktor Korchnoi he won the tournament in Be'er Scheva , as well as together with Gyula Sax and Nigel Short (1st – 3rd) the interzonal tournament in Subotica , which meant a qualification for the candidates tournament.

In the first round of the candidate fights in Saint John in 1988 , Speelman faced the American Yasser Seirawan , whom he convincingly defeated 4: 1 (+3 = 2 −0). In the following quarter-finals in London he played against his compatriot Nigel Short, whom he defeated with 3.5: 1.5 (+2 = 3 −0). He then stormed into the semi-finals, where he met the Dutchman Jan Timman , who he lost in London in 1989 with 3.5: 4.5 (+1 = 5 −2) and was eliminated.

1991 Speelman was pre-qualified for the candidate fights and got his compatriot Short again drawn in the first round, to which he was subject in rapid chess play . The competition was organized in London and ended regularly 4: 4 (+2 = 4 −2), Short finally qualified as the challenger to world champion Garry Kasparov in this cycle .

In 1993 Speelman won the Lloyds Bank Open in London, in 1994 in Altensteig , 1998 in Roskilde , 2003, 2004 (shared) and 2005 (shared) the Howard Staunton Memorial in London.

Speelman, a trained mathematician, wrote some works on chess literature .

Team chess

National team

Speelman represented England from 1980 to 2006 at 14 consecutive Chess Olympiads . He reached second place with the team in 1984 , 1986 and 1988 , and in 1986 he also achieved the second best result on the first reserve board. From 1977 to 2005 Speelman took part in nine European team championships and won the competition in 1997 with the English team. In 1980 and 1992 the team reached third place, in 1980 Speelman also achieved the second best result on the fourth board. In 1985, 1989 and 1997 Jonathan Speelman took part in the World Team Championship . In 1985 and 1989 the English team took third place, in 1997 Speelman won the individual ranking on the fourth board.

Club chess

In the British Four Nations Chess League Speelman played from 1995 to 1997 for Slough , in the 1997/98 season for Invicta Knights Maidstone , from 1998 to 2006 for Wood Green , from 2006 to 2009 for The ADs and since 2009 for Wood Green Hilsmark Kingfisher . He won the competition in 1996 , 2003 , 2005 , 2006 , 2010 and 2012 . In the German federal chess league Speelman played from 1996 to 1999 at SG 1868-Aljechin Solingen and from 1999 to 2003 at the Lübeck chess club from 1873 . He was German team champion in 1997 , 2001 , 2002 and 2003 . In the 2018/19 season he plays with Munich SC 1836 in the 2nd Bundesliga East . Jonathan Speelman played in the Dutch Hoofd class or Meest class in the 1995/96 season at Cap Volmac Rotterdam and in the 2006/07 season at HMC Calder . In the Spanish team championship Speelman played from 1994 to 1996 and again in 1998 for the team of CA Villa de Teror , with which he became champions in 1994 . He took part in the European Club Cup in 1980/82 with the London club King's Head , 1987/88, 1991/92 and 1993 with Volmac Rotterdam , 1997 with Slough and 1998 with the Invicta Knights Maidstone and achieved the third as the greatest success in 1987/88 Place with the team.
