Justin Timothy Braun (born February 10, 1987 in Vadnais Heights , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League since June 2019 and plays there in the position of defender . Previously, Braun spent a total of nine seasons in the organization of the San Jose Sharks .
Career
After Braun graduated from high school , he began his junior career in the United States Hockey League with the Green Bay Gamblers during the 2004/05 season . In his first season he played ten games without being able to score a point . For the following season, the defender was an integral part of the gamblers' squad and played 59 games in which he scored 13 points. In the summer of 2006, Braun decided to start studying at the University of Massachusetts Amherst . There he played parallel for the university's ice hockey team, the UMass Minutemen , in Hockey East , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In total, the defender stayed at college for four years and was able to celebrate his call to the all-rookie team at Hockey East in his rookie year . He was then selected in the summer of 2007 in the seventh round in 201st place by the San Jose Sharks in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft . After his statistical values on the offensive remained almost the same as the previous season in the following season, Braun received a nomination for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award . However, Kevin Porter won this . In the 2008/09 season, Braun increased on the offensive again. Consequently, he was elected to the Second All-Star Team of Hockey East at the end of the season. Braun's fourth and final year of college was ultimately his most personally successful. With eight goals, 23 assists and 31 points, he set personal bests. He was also appointed to the First All-Star Team of the Hockey East and East Second All-American Team of the NCAA and was named the best defensive defender of the Hockey East.
Because of his achievements, the San Jose Sharks submitted him to a professional two-year contract right after the college season ended. The American signed this on March 25, 2010 before he made his debut for the Worcester Sharks , San Jose's farm team from the American Hockey League , on April 7 . By the end of the season he played in two other regular season games and eleven playoff matches . After the summer break, the American took part in the San Jose Sharks' pre-season training camp. There he could not initially recommend himself for a regular place and thus began the 2010/11 season in the AHL. On November 26, 2011 he finally made his debut in the National Hockey League and established himself there in the regular squad in the following years. In total, the American stayed with the Sharks for nine seasons and completed nearly 700 NHL games during this period. In June 2019, Braun had to leave the Sharks after nine years as a result of a transfer when he was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a second-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and a third-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft .
International
At the international level, Braun represented his home country at the 2012 World Cup in Finland and Sweden . Braun was used in all eight American tournament games, but did not score a point. The team finished in seventh place at the end of the tournament.
