This section deals with the history of Rotkreuz. For a more general history, see the history of the municipality of Risch .

In 1808 the inn at the red cross is mentioned for the first time. In 1864 a stop was built next to this inn on the Zug – Lucerne railway line of the Zurich-Zug-Lucerne Railway , against the will of Risch, who preferred a stop in the Unterrüti. With the construction of the Aargau Southern Railway (1881/1882), which crossed the Zurich-Zug-Lucerne Railway in Rotkreuz and merged with the Gotthard Railway in Immensee , the Rothkreuz stop developed into an important train station in traffic between Germany and Italy .

In addition to the inn at the red cross , a school was built on the Rotkreuzhof from 1879, which in 1883 moved to the newly built schoolhouse on the country road to Meierskappel. On July 2, 1926, the purchase contract between the widow Anna Gügler-Frey and the cath. Kultusverein Rothkreuz concluded, in which the Kultusverein buys the “buildings and land in Walderten, Forren in the Allrüti and Wald in Honauerwald-Risch”. At the point in the middle of the village next to the new school, an artificial hill was heaped up on which the Catholic. Rotkreuz Church was built. The groundbreaking was on September 10, 1937, the opening of the church with the arrival of the bells on July 15, 1938. The murals created by Lothar Albert depicted Christ hanging on the cross and suffering in the choir; The patroness of the church, the Rosary Queen, was enthroned above the left side altar, while on the right the secondary patrons Josef and Burkhard embodied the male love of God. In 1981 the church was restored and the wall paintings were replaced by pictures by Franz Bucher .

As early as the Second World War , IPSA (Industrie petrolifère SA) opened the first Swiss oil refinery in Rotkreuz, as well as an extraction plant that made oil and heating material from coffee grounds. In 1959 the Buonas parish office was relocated to the former school building on Meierskappelerstrasse. With the construction of the Dorfmatt center in 1986 near the train station, Rotkreuz finally became the main town of the Risch community and this construction gave it a small-town character. The structure plan from 1970 set the boundaries of Rotkreuz. With the construction of the motorway junction of the A4 and A14 and the settlement of important international companies such as Roche Diagnostics , the town experienced rapid population and economic growth between 1960 and 2010, which increased the population almost tenfold. By 2012, large parts of the town center had been redesigned and rebuilt, including the new Arkadenhof buildings . In 2010, construction began on the Suurstoffi district in der Langweid, which has been the centralized headquarters of Novartis Switzerland as well as Novartis Pharma, Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, Alcon and Consumer Health since 2013 .

In 2000, the construction of Legoland Switzerland in Rotkreuz was rejected. At Pentecost 2002, heavy rains caused flooding in the whole community.
