Kifisia , often also Kifissia, ( Greek Κηφισιά ( f. Sg. ), Latin Cephisia), named after Kephisos , who rises in the north , is a municipality and city in the northeast of the Attica region in Greece and a suburb of Athens . Kifissia is the northern terminus of Line 1 of the Athens Metro .

history

Metro to Kifissia

Kifissia was already a popular place of residence for the rich in ancient times. The speaker and patron Herodes Atticus , one of the richest men of his time, owned a villa there. In the 19th century and well into the 20th century, the place was a popular destination for the Athenians, who also built holiday homes there. The good air in the Pendeli Mountains, around 300 meters above sea level , is particularly valued. Numerous grand hotels were built (of which only the Pentelikon is still in operation).

In 1940, in Kifissia, the then Greek head of state Ioannis Metaxas was presented with the Italian ultimatum, which, according to legend, went with his famous answer “ όχι! "(" No! ") Led.

When the metro was extended to the town's main square in the early 1950s, Kifissia turned into a posh residential area with apartment buildings. Today the place has lost its importance as a high society residence to the northern district of Ekali . The place was able to assert itself as an upscale shopping center with numerous luxury shops and restaurants and competes with the Athens district of Kolonaki .

Location and parishes

Through the community reform in 2010 , the previous community Kifisia was united with the more northerly Nea Erythrea and Ekali. Since then, Kifisia has been located in the far north of the Athens-North regional district.

It includes:

  • Kifisia (with the districts of Ano Kifissia, Kato Kifissia, Adames, Nea Kifissia, Politia, Kefalari): 45,015 inhabitants, 25.94 ha
  • Nea Erythrea : 15,972 inhabitants, 4.83 hectares
  • Ekali: 5,497 inhabitants, 4.33 ha
