The CowParade is an international project for art in public space based on the idea of cow culture in 1998 in Zurich .

The "Land in Sicht - auf nach Zürich" campaign is an initiative of the City Vereinigung Zürich, which selected Walter Knapp's concept of brightly painted cows from several proposals . This had a well-known forerunner in Zurich, where brightly painted lion sculptures (lions are Zurich's heraldic animal) were set up in the city in 1986. In 1998, two years after the concept decision, the cows were made and painted under the artistic direction of Walter Knapp. It was only in the course of the campaign that it received its more catchy name, "Zurich Cow Culture", which is used today. Part of the concept was that several blanks were cast in fiberglass from a lifelike model ordered from the zoo, and these blanks were sold to sponsors who could then freely design them. A total of 815 blanks were purchased from 395 sponsors and 400 artists, but also entire school classes, then painted them. Following the event, 180 of the 815 cow objects were sold through an auction, with total proceeds of around 1.4 million francs.

In the USA, the businessman Peter Haning became aware of the idea and organized the first "Cows On Parade" with Lois Weisberg, City Councilor for Culture in Chicago in 1999. For this purpose, the Swiss sculptor Pascal Knapp has now designed three more basic shapes, around 800 of them Casts could then be designed. The PR potential was recognized in Switzerland and the idea was marketed internationally with the Swiss marketing company, CowHolding Parade AG, founded in 1999. An American rival company, CowHolding Parade, which also operated in New York 2000, was sued for injunctive relief.

After the performance in New York in 2000, the idea was then adapted to the Buddy Bear in Berlin . From this line grew an international promotion line of the United Buddy Bears . Other big cities have taken up the idea for other animals and actions, including the Munich Lion Parade 2005. Zurich itself has again adapted the bears as an art action and in "Teddy Summer 2005" 630 teddy objects worked on by artists and graphic artists in Zurich and at the airport Kloten set up.
