Animal parades are commercial or urban actions for public art.

On the one hand, these parades increase people's identification with their hometown, on the other hand, the sale of the sculptures often helps to support charitable institutions.

history

The Animal Parades is an international project for art in public space based on the idea of ​​the 1998 cow culture in Zurich.

In addition to the international CowParade and United Buddy Bears , there were numerous other cities that carried out actions with decorative fiberglass figures in public spaces.

After the CowParade in New York in 2000, the idea took hold in the metropolises of Europe, but in Berlin, instead of the cow, the idea was adapted to the Berlin bear . The idea is becoming increasingly popular both internationally and in smaller cities and is being further adapted. In 2017, sculpture projects to support local charitable purposes will be implemented in Cologne (artistically designed cathedral sculptures) and Zug (artistically designed bulls).

Creation of the sculptures

In the first step, a figure that is typical of the city in question is usually selected and then made of weather-resistant plastic (also called GRP) in a size of up to two meters.

Then the artistic design of the figures is tendered and at the same time sponsorships are taken over by local companies and / or private individuals who bear the costs of the figures, their painting, clear varnish to protect them from the weather and the installation, for example on a concrete base.

The sculptures then remain in public space for a while (e.g. over the summer) and are then sold to interested parties or auctioned off through a charity campaign. The proceeds either go to the implementing company, the municipality or a special (mostly social) project.
