The Kumamoto Prefecture ( Jap. 熊本県 , Kumamoto-ken ) is a prefecture of Japan . It is located in the Kyushu region on the island of Kyushu. The seat of the prefecture administration is the city of the same name Kumamoto .

history

The Kumamoto Prefecture largely corresponds in terms of territory to the ancient Higo Province . A first Kumamoto-ken emerged in 1871 from the principality of the same name (- han ) Kumamoto . It was later temporarily renamed Shirakawa and in 1873 it was united with Yatsushiro Prefecture , in which other principalities / prefectures in Higo Province had previously been combined. In 1876 Shirakawa was renamed Kumamoto again.

With the introduction of the municipal regulations designed by German consultants and the associated major Meiji regional reform in 1889, over 300 communities emerged in Kumamoto, including the prefecture capital as the only independent city (- shi ) at the time.

As in 2016, the opposing candidate was Seishi Kōyama (once an LDP deputy in the prefectural parliament, then 2002-2014 mayor of the city of Kumamoto), in 2020 with support from the SPD .

In parliament with 49 members from 21 constituencies, the Liberal Democratic Party held an absolute majority with 31 seats in the regional elections in April 2019 .

In the national parliament , Kumamoto is represented by four directly elected MPs in the Chamber of Deputies and two in the Council House ; after the elections in 2016 , 2017 and 2019 all six Liberal Democrats.

The Suizenji Prefectural Administration Building Complex, Kumamoto City.
Current municipalities in Kumamoto:
purple - designated city,

Since 2010 there are still 45 communities in Kumamoto: 14 [district] cities (- shi ) , of which only the capital in a special form for large cities, 23 [district] cities ( -machi / -chō ) and eight villages ( -mura ) . After the introduction of today's community forms in 1889, there were initially over 350 communities, before the great Shōwa territorial reform of the 1950s, over 300, in 2000, before the start of the great Heisei territorial reform, 94.

In the table below, the districts ( Gun , 郡) are shown in italics, underneath each (indented) the small towns ( Machi / Chō , 町) and the villages ( Mura , 村) therein. The first three digits of the code (1st column) also show a relationship between the rural district and the small town; the code always ends here with the number 'zero'. At the beginning of the table are the independent cities ( Shi , 市).

Notes:

  • For the sake of readability, multi-part place and district names (double places, for differentiation prefixed province / prefecture / district names, cardinal points, etc.) and regional authority suffixes have been separated by a hyphen, the other Romanization practice is inconsistent.
  • There are several areas with an unclear course of the municipal boundaries, including the prefectural border between Kumamoto and Ōita.
