Laudato si ' is the title of an oratorio composed by the church musician Peter Reulein based on a libretto by Father Helmut Schlegel OFM . It was premiered on November 6, 2016 in the High Cathedral of Limburg in Limburg an der Lahn . The concert film of the same name was first sold on DVD on January 29th .

Emergence

In the spring of 2015, the Church Music Department (RKM) of the Diocese of Limburg made the first plans for the 50th anniversary of this department in 2016. The decision was made in favor of a commissioned composition in the form of an oratorio, which should also be performed on other occasions. The diversity of church music in the diocese should be represented by different music groups. Texts and statements from Pope Francis were provided as a basis. The Magnificat should be linked to its two most recent encyclicals . For writing the libretto was Franciscans Helmut Schlegel, lyricist of new clergy songs obliged. This is how Francis of Assisi and Clare of Assisi came into play as actors. Since the Jubilee fell in the Holy Year of Mercy , its central theme was added. Peter Reulein was commissioned to compose the music for Schlegel's libretto. The graphic artist Dorothea Lindenberg designed a logo for the logo that plays with the elements of St. Francis of Assisi's song of the sun . The oratorio Laudato si '- A Franciscan Magnificat was created against the background of the religious and social context of 2015. It was published by Dehm-Verlag in 2016 .

The work is divided into a prologue and five images and the text is based on the Magnificat of Mary from the Gospel according to Luke in Latin ( Lk 1.46–55  EU ), which is the focus of the work. Mary is portrayed as a strong woman with deep faith and refreshing humanity. The Magnificat calls for “more” justice , solidarity and freedom .

Between the individual verses of the Magnificat, various story lines are built in, such as stations from the life of Mary (including the scene of the Annunciation , the "good advice" at the wedding in Cana ), paraphrased statements by Pope Francis from the two encyclicals with the name Evangelii gaudium (2013) and Laudato si ' (2015) as well as statements by Francis of Assisi , which are reproduced by him and Clare of Assisi .

The oratorio contains various texts by Francis of Assisi, in whose Canticle of the Sun the individual stanzas begin with “Laudato si '”, and by Pope Francis from the two encyclicals mentioned above. The motto of the Holy Year of Mercy plays a central role in the oratorio. Pope Francis has thus taken up the basic principles of the Magnificat and placed central questions of humanity at the center of the Christian message. This particularly includes justice, peace and the integrity of creation .

The prose texts mentioned were translated into rhythmic poetry by Helmut Schlegel . Clare of Assisi has her say, since Francis would have been inconceivable without Clare and the Magnificat is a woman's song . Women in particular were among the people whose humiliation was primarily counteracted by Jesus and, in his successor, the Evangelist Luke . The dawn of the “ Kingdom of God ” contradicts a superior or subordinate role in gender roles . In addition, mercy forms the basis of the message of the Bible and of all other religious searches of humanity. The oratory wants to invite one to look for the face of God in Jesus and to recognize and honor the face of Jesus in the faces of all living beings.

With a four- to eight-part choir , a children's and youth choir, a choral schola , organ , an orchestra , a speaker and five vocal soloists , a wide spectrum of church music forms is presented. Most of the work has the character of a joyful music festival. The recitative-like parts contain sounds from the genres of film music and music theater . A speaker explains the following picture in free words. The organ sets accents in the oratorio with echoes of compositions by Olivier Messiaen , Jehan Alain , Max Reger and Sigfrid Karg-Elert . A short organ passage in the style of a Hammond organ is a tribute to the jazz shows.

1st picture: The creation dances - the creation laments
In the first picture, Francis of Assisi (tenor solo) introduces the theme of Laudato si ' . He is assisted by a recorder and pizzicato - strings accompanied. The origin of Pope Francis from Argentina was the reason for the use of music in the style of Tango Argentino . In addition, the Choralschola can be heard for the first time .

2nd picture: God's new beginning
In the second picture the climax consists of the Jubilee of Mary. The theme of the Magnificat appears for the first time and is then taken up by the choir. The picture ends with the song Faith Can Like You by Helmut Schlegel (text) and Joachim Raabe (music) from 2009 from the German-language Catholic hymn book Gotteslob (GL / LM 885).

3rd picture: He gave you breath, gave you dignity.
The third picture begins with a musical- like representation of the wedding at Cana and ends with klezmer music .

4th picture: Life celebrates an uprising.
The fourth picture begins with a timpani solo and tuba sounds in the crucifixion scene on Mount Golgotha and the singing of the Choralschola. In a dramatic recitative, Pope Francis builds a bridge to the suffering of the present, such as poverty , prostitution , flight and displacement . This is followed by a duet by Franz and Klara, in which the harp , flute and subtle strings create an intimate atmosphere . Children's voices then perform an Easter hallelujah as an African call and response .

5th picture: Every moment is beginning
The fifth and last picture begins like the first with a confident tango with Pope Francis, Francis and Clare in a trio . The conclusion is a doxology with the fanfare-like Magnificat theme. In the final hymn , the audience is asked to tune into the cosmos of creation . The final conclusion of the work is a double fugue ( Amen / Halleluja), which ends in a final jubilation.

Preparations for the performance on January 29, 2017 in Frankfurt Cathedral

The world premiere of the oratorio took place on November 6th, 2016 in Limburg Cathedral as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Church Music Department of the Diocese of Limburg, under the overall direction of Peter Reulein . Another performance of the oratorio took place on January 29, 2017 in the Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew in Frankfurt am Main . Further dates are currently open.

DVD release

The concert film was sold on DVD for the first time on January 29, 2017 . The recordings for the film were made during the world premiere of the oratorio on November 6, 2016 in Limburg Cathedral. In contrast to the publication of parts of the performance on YouTube , the two-hour concert film in widescreen format produced by Tonstudio Ölmuhle uses shots from different perspectives with close-ups of the singers and musicians.

Reviews

In his spontaneous words of thanks at the end of the premiere, Bishop Georg Bätzing referred to the term “sound space of prayer”, which the text author Helmut Schlegel found for the oratorio. He added that when he got the chance he would tell Pope Francis how well he was represented in Limburg.
