The men's 50 km walk at the 1983 World Athletics Championships was held on August 12, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .

36 athletes from 18 countries took part in the competition. The GDR goalkeeper Ronald Weigel won the gold medal after 3:43:08 h. Silver went to the Spanish vice European champion from 1982 José Marín , who was also European champion over the distance of 20 kilometers in the same year in 3:43:42 h . The bronze medal was secured by Sergei Jung from the Soviet Union with 3:49:03 h.

At that time, records were not kept in marathon running and street walking because of the different track conditions with the exception of championship records.

The winning time of 3:43:08 h for world champion Ronald Weigel from the GDR was also a new World Cup record.
