  The men's 5,000-meter race at the 2001 World Athletics Championships was held on August 6 and 10, 2001 in the Commonwealth Stadium in the Canadian city of Edmonton .
In this competition, long-distance runners from Kenya won two gold and bronze medals. Richard Limo became world champion after winning silver over 3000 meters in the 1998 African Championships . Second place went to the Ethiopian Olympic champion of 2000 million Wolde . John Kibowen won the bronze medal.

One doping case was recorded in this discipline.
The Algerian Ali Saïdi-Sief tested positive for nandrolone . he had to return his silver medal and was banned for two years.
Two athletes in particular suffered:
- John Kibowen , Kenya - He received his bronze medal a long time ago and was unable to attend the award ceremony.
- Mark Carroll , Ireland - He was actually qualified for the final with a time of 13: 37.27 minutes.
