The Lewiston Maineiacs were a professional American Junior Hockey Team in Lewiston , Maine , which from 2003 to 2011 in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League played. The franchise played its home games at Androscoggin Bank Colisée . The MAINEiacs were the only US team in the QMJHL and in 2007 they won the Coupe du Président , the league's championship.
history
For the 1969/70 season the franchise was founded in Trois-Rivières , Québec , where it played until 1992 under the names "Ducs" and "Draveurs". Until 2003 the team in Sherbrooke stood on the ice as "Faucons" and "Castors" when they were finally relocated to Lewiston.
In the first season as MAINEiacs, a made-up word from the US state of Maine and the English word "maniacs" ( German: insane), the team reached the QMJHL play-offs and failed in the first round due to the Huskies de Rouyn- Noranda . In the years that followed, the team grew steadily until it finally won the QMJHL championship in 2007. At the following Memorial Cup in Vancouver , British Columbia , the championship of the umbrella organization Canadian Hockey League , which is played annually between the champions of the top three Canadian junior leagues Western Hockey League , Ontario Hockey League and QMJHL, the team failed in the preliminary round.
On May 31, 2011, the team was bought by the QMJHL for 3.5 million US dollars and excluded from gaming. The MAINEiacs players were assigned to new teams after a dispersal draft .
