history

The first traces of settlement in this area point to the 6./7. Century. In the feudal book of Friedrich the Strict , Margrave of Meißen and Landgrave of Thuringia, the place was first mentioned as Lygau in 1349. The spelling of the place changed several times over the centuries, e.g. B. the spellings Lygau , Legow and Liegenn are handed down. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the spelling Lügau was often used . The word Liegau comes from Sorbian and means something like place at the tree line and the laughing trees . Evidence of the Liegau manor , which emerged from a Vorwerk , already exists from the beginning of the 17th century .

After the discovery of the healing springs in Tannengrund , the place grew steadily. The later district of Augustusbad developed from the bath in Tannengrunde , later the Radeberger bath . According to the Saxon rural community code, a community council was elected in 1839 . The village was thus separated from the manor. In 1922 took place fusion of all previous layers or local districts with the renaming of the new community in Liegau-Augustusbad .

A Petroleum -Straßenbeleuchtung there were from 1890, the connection to the power grid was carried out in 1910. In the late 1920s began the construction of settlements Hofeberg and settlement , more residential houses at the beginning of the 1930s in the so-called civil settlement . Kleinwachau was incorporated in 1964. Liegau-Augustusbad has been a district of Radeberg since 1995, which has been part of the Bautzen district since the Saxony district reform in 2008 .

The center of Liegau-Augustusbad was included in the Active City and District Centers funding program of the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Development in 2009 , and the structure and infrastructure of the place have been extensively renovated since then.

church

Liegau does not have its own church, it was and is parish in Radeberg . In the former Augustusbad, special services were held for the spa guests by clergy from the Radeberg Intendentur. A new parish hall was built for the Liegauer parish members in June 2004, and it was financed through donations, own funds and the sale of the previous parish hall. Spiritual support is provided by the Radeberger Land parish.

School history

Until 1896, Liegau did not have its own school. Until the construction of their own school and the formation of their own new school district in 1896, the Liegauer children belonged to the Lotzdorf school district and were enrolled in Lotzdorf.

Baths

The Silberberg , east of Liegau, but in the district of Lotzdorf, was already crossed by several mine tunnels before the 16th century, in which silver and vitriol-containing rocks were mined for a short time . In 1717, the then mayor of Radeberg, Christoph Seydel, found a slightly carbonated water vein in such a former tunnel . With this discovery the time of the (therapeutic) baths in Liegau began.

Augustus bath

The first therapeutic bath was founded in 1719 as a health bath or bath in Tannengrunde and later named after the Saxon Elector August the Strong Augustus Bath . The Augustusbad was constantly expanded and expanded until the 19th century. The pharmacist Willmar Schwabe bought the bath in 1896 and added it to his Dr. Willmar Schwabeschen Heimstätten Foundation . In the GDR , the property served as a police school and old people's home; after the fall of the Wall, the buildings were left to decay.

Herrmannbad

Postcard of the Liegau spa, 1898

In 1835 (other source: 1837) Johann Georg Herrmann acquired the Liegau hereditary and allodial manor as the first non-aristocratic owner . In 1841 Herrmann discovered springs with iron-rich water on a moor meadow belonging to the manor below the later trout tavern. In 1852 he opened his first small bath house, and in 1853 the Curbadrestaurant . The hard, mineral-rich and medicinal spring water was transported from the spring, which has now been enclosed, in wooden barrels on horse-drawn vehicles to the bathhouse and mixed there with the soft water of the Großer Röder for the spa treatments. In 1857, after the construction of a new, larger bath house behind the manor and with the existing building stock, which had been converted to accommodate bathers, the Herrmannbad Liegau was founded. The medical management of the spa was subordinate to the Radeberg spa doctor Dr. med. Böhme. In 1878 a park-like garden was built at the bath. This spa, also known as the “Stahl- und Moorbad Herrmannbad”, belonged to the manor from 1857 to 1914. In 1888 the manor belonged to Baron von Streit, who had continued the spa and bathing business. In the first half of the 20th century, the bath was closed and the buildings were converted into residential buildings.

River bath on the Röder

The existence of a simple bathing area on the course of the Großer Röder has already been handed down for 1909. In 1922 the Liegau river bath was officially set up by the local association and operated by the local council. Due to the newly opened family pool, the Flussbad was closed in 1931.

In the first few years, numerous events were held in the new outdoor pool, and the pool attracted large numbers of visitors. The bathing restaurant is based on the former Herrmannbad under the traditional name Hermannsquelle , but changed for legal reasons . After the Second World War , the bath was initially used as a children's holiday camp and open-air theater. Necessary repair measures in order to continue the bathing operation failed. In the 1980s, part of the former bathing area was built on with bungalows , while another part was used as a pond area by the local fishing club . After the fall of the Wall, the remains of the bath fell into disrepair and were overgrown by the forest.
