List of cable car incidents and cable car accidents (both from aerial and funicular railways ). The list does not claim to be complete.

1930-1949

November 26, 1932
Schauinslandbahn - Germany - Due to a serious operating error by a conductor, only one pull rope was coupled to the train. As a result, the cabin got over the fallen pulling rope and was levered by the carrying rope shortly before the valley station. The cabin fell 13 meters down, killing three people (including the conductor). After extensive investigations, which confirmed the basic safety of the railway, operations could be resumed in January 1933.

1950-1959

Plabutsch chairlift - Austria - After the chairlift was switched off, it started moving again and reached almost five times its normal speed. 1 dead, 7 injured.

Santos - São Paulo (State) - Brazil, in the Brazilian port city of Santos, the cabin of a cable car tore down and fell down a steep mountain slope. 31 dead.

Aiguille du Midi - France, a military machine cut the pulling rope of the small cable car Vallée Blanche at the Aiguille du Midi in the Mont Blanc massif while flying low : 3 cabins fell about 150 m deep, six dead.
December 25, 1965
Puy de Sancy - France, when a gondola stopped due to a power failure, an outer wall of the cable car at Puy de Sancy in central France broke. Seventeen people fell, seven of whom were killed.

Aiguille du Midi - France, a cable break in a cable car on the Aiguille du Midi in the Mont-Blanc massif crashed three gondolas: four dead.

Squaw Valley - California - USA, during a hurricane, two cables of a cable car were knocked out of the top cable car pillar. One of the ropes broke through the roof of the cabin: four dead, 22 injured.

Tarsch im Vinschgau - South Tyrol - Italy, two dead and 23 injured as a result of the failure of all three brakes on a chairlift.
February 13, 1983
Aosta Valley - Aosta - Italy, in the collision of two cabins in the Italian Aosta Valley, eleven people were killed.

Sentosa - Singapore, eight people died when a cabin crashed into the sea between Singapore and Sentosa Island.

Pavagadh Ropeway, 45 km from Vadodara , Panchmahal district, Gujarat state , India : Three gondolas of the pilgrim's cable car to Mahakali Temple crashed when the rope jumped from the pulley; six people were killed and some injured.

Sölden (Ötztal) - Tyrol - Austria, the control rope of the Schwarze-Schneid-Bahn 2 got into the suspension cable due to wind-generated natural vibrations, got caught there and stopped the train. When the emergency drive was started up without a prior visual inspection, the control cable tore and brought an empty nacelle to crash. At minus 15 degrees Celsius, the 115 passengers were rescued in eight hours.

Mürren - Bernese Oberland - Switzerland, on one of the two suspension ropes of the Schilthorn cable car , all the ropes of the rope jacket have torn, the rope core remained intact. The train could be stopped before passing the damaged area. All 53 passengers were recovered unharmed. The cause was found to be an improper shifting of the suspension cable in 1979, the damage of which was not discovered using the test methods that had been customary to date.

A gondola of the Brülisau-Hohen Kasten cable car races unchecked into the valley station during an inspection run. The cabin was empty. The deputy operations manager in the valley station was seriously injured and had to be flown to the hospital by rescue helicopter. The cabin and the valley station are badly damaged. The reason was an operator error in the system.

In the US state of Maine , several winter sports enthusiasts were thrown from a chairlift when the rope jumped from the pulleys. 6 or 8 people were injured. According to another source, the accident occurred at the Spillway East double chairlift on Sugerloaf Mountain, Franklin County, Maine on December 28, 2010 and injured 8 passengers.

In Schwangau , Bavaria : After an interruption due to the Einfluges a glider into the ropes of Tegelbergbahn 30 passengers from one of the gondolas had to be lowered from about 50 meters high; 19 people in the other gondola could only be rescued by helicopter the following day.

At the start of operations on the Stubai Glacier in Tyrol , an unoccupied gondola of the EUB Gamsgarten II detached itself from the hoisting rope due to a faulty coupling due to an incorrectly set dome locking rail and fell below the mountain station; three more gondolas were damaged. People were not harmed. According to a statement by the BMVIT , the instructions in the operating regulations regarding what to do if the faulty clutch warning were triggered were not followed.

From the uphill cabin of the Schlossalmbahn II near Bad Hofgastein in Austria , 80 people had to be roped down 30 m after a pulling rope overturned due to a gust of wind, after it was not possible to restart the cableway again. Nobody was hurt.

On the small gondola lift Vallée Blanche in France , a strong gust of wind caused the hauling rope to overturn over the supporting rope. 110 people had to be rescued, partly by helicopter and partly by abseiling. 33 of them could not be saved until the next morning. There were no injuries.
January 3, 2018
As a result of an unexpectedly strong gust of wind, a gondola of the Kitzbüheler Hornbahn in Austria got wedged at the entrance to the middle station. The 24 people still trapped in the gondolas were rescued by the rescue organizations in about two hours, there were no injuries to complain about, but there was considerable damage to property.

In the holiday resort of Gudauri in Georgia, a chairlift built by the Vorarlberg company Doppelmayr got out of control due to human error and reversed at unusually high speed. In a heavy storm, a Wimbachexpress gondola gets stuck on support 6 in the Hochfügen-Hochzillertal ski area . Before the cable car comes to a standstill, four more cabins collide with the first and become wedged. Passenger operations on the railway had already been stopped due to the wind alarm, and the empty gondolas were already on their way to the garage. No injuries.

From 2020

February 6, 2020
After closing time at 4 p.m., at 10 p.m. there will be a special descent with only three armchairs in the upper section of the Stoos- Fronalpstock SZ chairlift for the participants of a celebration in the summit restaurant. The middle four-seater collides with the tensioned winch rope of a snowcat and falls about 10 m from the hoisting rope. Two people are life-threatening and two are seriously injured. Six people in the other armchairs are also rescued by helicopter within two hours.
