Matej Mohorič (born October 19, 1994 in Kranj ) is a Slovenian cyclist .

Career

In 2011 Matej Mohorič was Slovenian junior champion in the individual time trial ; the following year he finished second. He also won the Giro di Basilicate, the Giro della Lunigiana , the international junior cycling tour of Upper Austria and took third place in the junior individual time trial at the European Road Championships. The highlight of his sporting year was his victory at the Junior World Championships in road racing ; in the individual time trial he also won silver.

In 2013 Mohorič won the U23 road race in Florence at the Road World Championships . This makes him the first cyclist to be both world champion in the juniors and in the U23 class.

In 2014, the Slovenian competed in his first professional season with the UCI WorldTeam Cannondale at the age of 19. In 2015 Mohorič made his debut at the Vuelta a España in a Grand Tour , but gave up after six stages due to illness.

In 2016 he moved to the Italian team Lampre-Merida , where he finished the Giro d'Italia in 98th place. At the Slovenian championships he came second in the time trial behind compatriot Primož Roglič . At the end of the season he recorded his first professional victory on the 6th stage of the Tour of Hainan .

In 2017 Mohorič won the 7th stage of the Vuelta a España after being able to break away from an escape group in a descent.

In 2018 Matej Mohorič signed a contract with Bahrain-Merida , in March he won the Italian one-day race Gran Premio Industria & Artigianato , at the Giro d'Italia he triumphed on the 10th stage after beating Nico Denz in the finish sprint. In the further course he became Slovenian road racing champion and won a stage in the Tour of Austria . He was also able to win the overall ranking of the BinckBank Tour with a 5 second lead over Michael Matthews . A few days later Mohorič won the second stage of the Deutschland Tour in a mass sprint and took the lead in the overall standings, which he was able to defend until the finish in Stuttgart .

At the beginning of October 2019, Mohorič fell badly after completing the second stage of the Tour of Croatia , after a man suddenly ran onto the road behind the finish line. He suffered two broken ribs, a pneumothorax and a hemorrhage in the diaphragm .
