McLaren MP4 / 8
The McLaren MP4 / 8 is a Formula 1 racing car from Team McLaren that was used in the 1993 World Championship season . The car developed by Neil Oatley and Henri Durand was driven by Ayrton Senna , Michael Andretti and Mika Häkkinen , who replaced Andretti after 13 races. You won five Grand Prix with the MP4 / 8 and took one pole position . Senna was runner-up in the constructors' championship behind Alain Prost ( Williams ) and McLaren was runner-up behind Williams.
The MP4 / 8 was powered by a V8 engine from Ford Cosworth of the HB series . The longitudinally mounted suckers - mid-engine with 75 ° cylinder bank angle was 3497 cc. Since Cosworth's preferred customer Benetton refused to supply the competitor with current HB-VII engines, McLaren only had HB-V engines available at the beginning of the season, which were at the level of 1991 and were about 40 hp weaker than Benetton's HB VII However, McLaren was responsible for further developing the electronics of the HB motors together with technology partner TAG, so that the difference in performance was reduced. In contrast to the other HB customer engines, the McLaren HBs were not serviced by Grand Prix Engines Services , whose owner Tom Walkinshaw was also technical director at Benetton at the time. In order to avoid possible conflicts of interest, Cosworth took over the maintenance of the McLaren engines. From the Grand Prix of Great Britain , McLaren also received the HB-VII engines. At the Grand Prix of Germany 1993 finally debuted the HB VIII. McLaren had been in Friday practice access to him, Benetton until Saturday training. However, this engine also had significant performance deficits compared to the Renault engines of the Williams . Power was transmitted by a transversely installed 6-speed McLaren gearbox with a semi-automatic gearshift. The monocoque of CFRP was in sandwich honeycomb construction executed. The car was equipped with an active suspension .
Towards the end of the season, the MP4 / 8 was used as a test vehicle for the Lamborghini engine planned for the following season . The team then decided at short notice in favor of Peugeot as the new engine supplier.
