Michael Obst (rower)

Michael Obst (born June 22, 1944 in Leipzig ) is a former German rower . He won Olympic gold for the all-German team in Rome in 1960 .

Obst was the helmsman at the Germania Dusseldorf rowing club in 1904 . In 1958 he was together with Gerd Cintl and Horst Effertz German champion in two with helmsman. In 1959 the three rowers switched to the four-man with a helmsman. The Germania Düsseldorf boat with the line-up of Klaus Wegner , Gerd Cintl, Horst Effertz, Claus Hess with Obst as helmsman won both the German and European championships.

The boat was modified for the 1960 Olympic Games on Lake Albano . In the line-up of Gerd Cintl, Horst Effertz, Klaus Riekemann , Jürgen Litz and Michael Obst, the boat won both the pre-run and the intermediate run with the fastest time. In the final, the boat was able to assert itself against the French boat.

Fruit received the silver bay leaf twice for his athletic achievements . For the first time he was awarded on August 23, 1959; he received it again on October 8, 1960.
