Netherlands
The Dutch Society , or the Netherlands for short, is a gentlemen’s society for the cultivation of art , humor and friendship . It was founded on February 7, 1870 by the Bavarian equestrian officer and renowned painter Ludwig von Nagel in Bayreuth . In his previous garrisons, Nagel found a number of artistically gifted colleagues who neglected their talent due to a lack of stimulation. So, following the example of the Dutch artists' guilds, he founded a friendship group in which artistic amateurs wereexchange and use their talents. His idea quickly spread across Bavaria. Soon non-military officials were also accepted as members. After Nagel's death in 1899, further law firms were established in many Bavarian and Palatinate cities . Today there are 20 independent groups that are united in "Allniederlandt". There are parallels to Schlaraffia , knight associations , student associations , artist societies and similar associations that were founded in the 19th century.
The name and language of the "Dutch"
Ludwig von Nagel had read about the guilds of Dutch painters in an art magazine , in particular about the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, first mentioned in 1442 . The guild cultivated the visual as well as the literary arts in an association strengthened by friendship. Von Nagel added other components, such as the musical arts and the element of humor. In and with this circle he wanted to create a “better world” for at least a few hours, carefree and without everyday worries, an “insula beatorum”, from which the everyday “vulgar world” was excluded. The "dt" in "Netherlands" comes from the language of the Dutch, which is based on early New High German . The model here was the diction of Grimmelshausen's Simplicissimus .
Forming the idea
Initially, the founder envisaged an “informal” association without statutes , without a board of directors and without any organizational structure. But it soon turned out that one person was supposed to lead the society evenings as “ primus inter pares ” and another should regulate financial matters. Otherwise, however, Nagel attached great importance to sociability without bureaucracy. In order to completely exclude everyday life and the annoyance associated with it, he invented a series of tools:
- everyone who joins the society is given a "Dutch name". a tool that has already been tried and tested in other similar associations to eliminate job titles as well as titles or differences in rank among the members, the so-called " Mynheeren ". Von Nagel called himself “Adrian van Os”, based on the Dutch painter Jan van Os , whose day of death, February 7th, is the same as the day the first Dutch partnership was founded. Today, Dutch first and last names regularly begin with the initials of the vulgar name
- you take off your everyday clothes and put on a “wämbslyn”, a garment based on the vests of the Renaissance and Baroque periods . The doublet is often complemented by a corresponding hat with a feather and other items of clothing and props
- the magic word that is used to greet, to affirm, to exclaim joy, astonishment and many other things is the little word "VAN". This word occurs in every Dutch name and is an acronym for "Vivat Amicitia Nostra" (= long live our friendship)
- you create a “ Losament ” or “Lokälyn” (usually the back room of an inn or other long-term rented premises) that you can design yourself artistically and in which you can also make music undisturbed
- you only deal with the “really important things in life”, that is, with art, humor and friendship. The monthly changing so-called "Auffgäb", which should be "solved" by every Mynheer, offers regular suggestions. This is usually a term that occurs specifically or figuratively in a piece of music, a picture, a poem or another creative work
- Topics from politics , religion , economy are firm during the evenings taboo .
Since the foundation of the covenant took place on February 7th, the chance day saint St. Romuald became the patron saint of the Dutch. The heraldic animal of the society is the "Lindlingswurmb" (= lindworm ) created by van Os , which guards his treasure, the Netherlands. The motto of the Dutch people from the start was “Happy, skillful hand”.
The founders
Ludwig von Nagel, born in Weilheim in 1836 , joined the 5th Chev in 1852 as a cadet . Regiment , participated in the wars of 1866 and 1870 and ended his military career as a major in 1877. Even at the beginning of his military service, a military veterinarian gave him the opportunity to draw horses based on living and dead models. He soon made a name for himself as a horse draftsman and painter . But Ludwig von Nagel was also a master of caricature . His works appeared from 1877 in the " Fliegende Blätter " and in various edited volumes . He was also a gifted painter, but an allergy to oils and turpentine prevented his development in the genre . In addition to Ludwig von Nagel, Franz Bonn , then a public prosecutor but also the author of several humorous books (pseudonym: von Miris), Moritz von Bomhard ( Lieutenant General ), Friedrich Zenk (Chief Auditor), Friedrich von Praun ( Lieutenant Colonel ) and Another six friends met on the founding day, February 7th, at the Gasthaus zur Sonne in Bayreuth, to which four other interested people soon joined.
The law firms
The company founded in Bayreuth was called "Mahlkasten". When some of its members died in 1873 and others were transferred, as is customary with the military, the Society dissolved in February 1874. Ludwig von Nagel, who was transferred to Würzburg in 1875, put his idea into practice there again and founded a grinding box there again in November 1876. But a short time later, in May 1877, he moved to Munich , where he founded the partnership “Der Krug” in December of the same year. Further foundings followed: in 1882 the "Treekschuyten" in Nuremberg, in 1889 "the Schilderbent" in Eichstätt , in 1892 "the Geusskann" in Bamberg and in 1898 "the waiting" in Landshut and "the canals" in Ansbach . As early as 1885, the former grinding box in Bayreuth was reactivated as "Urstätt". At the time of Ludwig von Nagel’s death, there were eight partnerships, all in Bavaria . Further foundings took place under Nagel's successors as “Grootmynheers”: 1900 in Ingolstadt “das Veldtlaager”, 1901 in Neuburg “die Fähr” and in Regensburg “die Bruckn”, 1902 in Passau “der Waterbak”, 1903 in Augsburg the “Lueg in d'Land ”, 1904 in Bad Kissingen “ the Scharpffbron ”, 1907 in Landau in the Palatinate “ the Hoogschans ”, 1910 in Hof “ the Windmolen ”and in 1914 in Amberg “ the Spelonken ”. In addition, after the First World War in 1928 "the Kaskuch" in Sonthofen and after the Second World War in 1966 "the Westwarfft" in Bonn on the Rhine. In autumn 2019 the 20th living partnership was launched in Pappenheim , "the Veste in the Trawt Nest". Some start-ups in Kiel , Saargemünd , Germersheim , Lüttich , Berlin , Kaiserslautern and Aschaffenburg resumed after a short or sometimes longer period. The two world wars and National Socialism were decisive here , in which the Netherlands, like many similar societies, was banned in some cities from 1938.
All Netherlands
The network of Dutch law firms, which stretched across Bavaria from 1877, required a central, albeit loose organization, the "Allniederlandt". Its head is the "Grootmynheer", who, in addition to coordinating tasks, also performs representative duties. The first Grootmynheer was Rembrandt van Mijn in 1899, Adrian van Os himself was never Grootmynheer, but the "Urmynheer".
Pappenheim
At the suggestion of Treekschuyten-Mynheeren van der Marschen, Mynheeren from the three law firms that existed at that time met in Pappenheim for the "Erist Mayenfahrt" in May 1884, with Count Max von Pappenheim taking over the patronage. Since then, the Dutch meet every year on the last weekend in May for their “Grosz Weltumsegelung to Pappinheimb” and celebrate the return of Mayen and the reunion for two days with music and singing, a festival and a parade followed by Mayen sermon (see glossary) with your friends.
Known members
Some of the 3000 or so Mynheeren who have belonged to the society since 1870 and still belong, included some well-known artists, for example the journalist and writer Fritz von Ostini , co-founder of the magazine Jugend , the Munich doctor, journalist and writer Anton Noder , under the pseudonym A.de Nora became known, the Nuremberg painter, etcher and graphic artist Rudolf Schiestl and other personalities such as the pioneering reform pedagogue Georg Kerschensteiner .
