The men's long jump at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich was held on September 8th and 9th, 1972 in the Munich Olympic Stadium. 36 athletes took part.

The American Randy Williams became Olympic champion . The silver medal went to Hans Baumgartner from the Federal Republic of Germany, while the bronze went to Arnie Robinson from the United States .

In addition to the silver medalist, Josef Schwarz and Andreas Gloerfeld also competed for the Federal Republic of Germany - officially Germany . Both were eliminated in qualifying.
The GDR was represented by Max Klauss , who finished sixth in the final.
Rolf Bernhard and Linus Rebmann started for Switzerland. Both failed in qualification.
Jumpers from Austria and Liechtenstein did not take part.

Conducting the competition

The jumpers competed in two groups for a qualifying round on September 8th. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 7.80 m. Since fewer than twelve athletes managed this distance, the final field was filled up to twelve participants according to the next best distance.
In the final, which took place in the afternoon of the same day, each athlete initially had three attempts. The best eight participants then had another three jumps.

The favorites were US jumpers Arnie Robinson and Randy Williams, who had jumped a junior world record in qualifying. The two-time bronze medalist Igor Ter-Owanessjan from the USSR, who competed in the Olympic Games for the fifth time, could not qualify for the final. The 1964 Olympic champion , Briton Lynn Davies, also failed to qualify.
In the final, Williams jumped his best distance with 8.24 m in the first attempt, but remained ten centimeters below his mark from the qualification. Hans Baumgartner from the Federal Republic of Germany came within six centimeters of the leader in the third attempt. Arnie Robinson jumped 8.03 m in the fifth attempt, which meant third place in the end. The order at the front didn't change anymore. Randy Williams became Olympic champion, Hans Baumgartner won the silver medal.

In the 17th Olympic final, Randy Williams jumped to the 15th US victory.
