Date: August 5, 1992
For the qualification, the athletes were drawn into two groups. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 18.50 m. Since only eight throwers exceeded this distance (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best female throwers from both groups to twelve participants (highlighted in light green). So finally 17.39 m was enough for the final

final
Date: August 7, 1992
Twelve athletes had qualified for the final, eight over the required qualification distance, the other four over their placements. All three participants from China and the United Team took part in the final. There were also two athletes from Germany and one participant each from Bulgaria, Cuba, Poland and the USA.
The Chinese world champion Huang Zhihong was considered the favorite. The 1988 Olympic champion Natalja Lissowskaja, who started for the United Team, no longer had the top form of earlier years. The 1988 silver medalist Kathrin Neimke, who competed for the GDR in Seoul , was there again, but was also no longer rated as very strong. A medal candidate, on the other hand, was the World Cup third Swetlana Kriweljowa from the United Team.
In the first attempt, Kriweljowa took the lead. At 20.34 m, she was nine centimeters from Zhihong. Neimke was third with 19.61 m, Lissowskaya with 18.60 m in the back field. With two more failed attempts, she failed to qualify for the final of the top eight. In lap two, Cuban Belsy Laza moved past Neimke to third with 19.70 m. In the third attempt, Zhihong reached 20.47 m and she had taken the lead. But Kriweljowa countered in the fifth round with 20.89 m and replaced the Chinese at the top again. Svetlana Kriweljowa extended her lead with her last stroke to 21.06 m and thus secured the Olympic victory over Huang Zhihong. Kathrin Neimke recently climbed to 19.78 m and moved past Laza to the bronze medal. Chinese Zhou Tianhua came in fifth ahead of Swetla Mitkowa from Bulgaria.
