All three Americans had qualified for the final. The final field was completed by one starter each from Germany, Haiti, Cuba, Sweden and Great Britain.

A select field was gathered here in the final. The world champions of the last four years met, the US runner Allen Johnson - 1996 Olympic champion - and the British Colin Jackson - reigning world champion , vice world champion Anier García from Cuba, the silver medalist from 1996 Mark Crear from the USA and the bronze medalist from 1996 Florian Schwarthoff from Germany. The third American Terrence Trammell was one of the favorites.

Up to the halfway point it was extremely close in this final. The runner field was almost on a line. But then García broke away from his competitors and won the race in 13.00 s. His lead over silver medalist Terrence Trammell was pretty comfortable at 16 hundredths of a second. Mark Crear won bronze and was able to relegate Johnson to fourth place by a hundredth of a second. Colin Jackson, who knocked over several hurdles in his race, was fifth ahead of Florian Schwarthoff.

Anier García was the first Cuban Olympic champion in this discipline.
