The men's 400-meter run at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens was held on August 20, 21 and 23, 2004 in the Athens Olympic Stadium. 62 athletes took part.

The US team achieved a triple success. Jeremy Wariner won ahead of Otis Harris and Derrick Brew .

With Ingo Schultz , a German was launched. Schultz was eliminated in the semifinals.
Athletes from Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein did not take part.

All three Americans and all three Jamaicans had qualified for the final. The final field was completed by one starter each from France and Grenada.

The favorites were mainly Alleyne Francique from Grenada and the three US athletes Jeremy Wariner, Otis Harris and Derrick Brew.

In the final race, the US runners were in the lead halfway through the race. Harris was ahead, Wariner and Brew not far behind. On the home stretch Wariner had caught up with Harris. The two fought an exciting duel. In the end, Jeremy Wariner got the upper hand and won Olympic gold by one meter. Otis Harris won the silver medal, Derrick Brew followed in third place. Alleyne Francique was fourth ahead of the two Jamaicans Brandon Simpson and Davian Clarke. The French came in seventh as the best European.

In the 25th Olympic final, Jeremy Wariner won the 18th gold medal for the USA in the 400-meter run . It was the sixth US victory in a row. At the same time, it was the fourth triple success for the USA in this discipline.
