The Oman Professional League 2016/17 was the 42nd season of the highest Omani football league since it was founded in 1975. The season started on September 17, 2016 and ended on May 19, 2017. The defending champion was Fanja SC .

mode

The clubs played a double round tournament , which resulted in a total of 26 games per team. The game was played according to the 3-point rule (three points per win, one point per tie). The table was determined according to the following criteria:

  1. Number of points scored
  2. Goal difference from all games
  3. Number of goals in all games

At the end of the season, the team with the highest points qualified for the group stage of the AFC Cup 2018 . In addition, the winner of the Oman Cup took part in the play-off round of the AFC Cup. The two clubs with the fewest points were relegated to the second-rate Oman First Division League , the 12th plays in two relegation games against the third of the final round of the Oman First Division League 2016/17 for relegation .

The al-Rustaq SC managed a masterpiece of the final round of Oman First Division League 2015/16 for the first time in their history the rise in the Oman Professional League. The second newcomer, the Oman Club , last played in the top Omani league in the 2012/13 season. The third newcomer, Jalan SC , had prevailed in the relegation games and thus rose to the first class for the first time.

The three promoted teams replaced the last three clubs in the 2015/16 season , Salalah SC , Sur SC and al-Musannah SC . The Salalah SC had to return to the Oman First Division League after just one year in the Oman Professional League. For the Sur SC and the al-Musannah SC, relegation meant the end of their respective five-year membership in the Omani football upper house.

    Relegation

    The 12th of the Oman Professional League 2016/17 played against the 3rd of the final round of the Oman First Division League 2016/17 in a play-off round with a round trip for relegation . The first leg took place on May 24th and the second leg on May 28th, 2017. The winner qualified for the Oman Professional League 2017/18 .
