Orcia (wine)

The name Orcia DOC refers to Italian red , white and rosé wines as well as a Vin Santo from the province of Siena , Tuscany . The wines have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 2000 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

Cultivation and vinification of these wines are only permitted in the province of Siena in the Tuscany region. The authorized municipalities are: Castiglione d'Orcia , Pienza , Radicofani , San Quirico d'Orcia , Buonconvento , Trequanda and parts of the municipalities of Abbadia San Salvatore , Chianciano , Montalcino , Sarteano , San Casciano dei Bagni and Torrita di Siena .

The denomination prescribes the following grape varieties for the different types:

  • Orcia (without any additional additions, but also as "Riserva"): is a red wine that must contain at least 60% Sangiovese . A maximum of 40% other red grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added. In addition, a maximum of 10% white grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be included in the mixture.
  • Orcia Rosato : At least 60% Sangiovese must be included. A maximum of 40% other red grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added. In addition, a maximum of 10% white grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be included in the mixture.
  • Orcia Bianco : At least 50% Trebbiano Toscano must be included. A maximum of 50% other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
  • Orcia Sangiovese and Orcia Sangiovese Riserva : At least 90% Sangiovese must be included. A maximum of 10% Canaiolo nero , Colorino , Ciliegiolo , Foglia tonda , Pugnitello and Malvasia nera may be added - individually or together.
  • Orcia Vin Santo : At least 50% Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia Bianca Lunga must be included - individually or together. A maximum of 50% other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.

The Orcia can carry the title "Riserva" if it has matured for at least 24 months, of which at least 12 months in wooden barrels. Orcia Sangiovese must have matured for at least 30 months (of which at least 24 months in wooden casks) before it can be given the title "Riserva".
