Palatine is a place in Cook County in the US state of Illinois with the legal form of a Village . At the 2010 census , Palatine had 68,557 inhabitants.

Palatine is located on the very edge of the Chicago metropolitan area , just under 50 km northwest of the city of Chicago . The largest neighboring cities are Arlington Heights in the southeast, Schaumburg in the south, Barrington and Lake Zurich in the northwest and Buffalo Grove in the northeast.

history

Palatine was founded in 1866. It was built around a stop on the new Chicago and North Western Railway . Joel Wood surveyed the land and is believed to be the founder of Palatine. One of the streets in the town center was named after him.

The place has seen rapid population growth since the 1970s, as part of Chicago's sprawling suburban areas.

Demographic data

According to the United States Census 2000 , 65,479 residents lived in 25,518 households and 16,586 families. The population was made up of 83.05% white, 7.56% Asian and 2.15% black. Hispanics or Latinos made up 14.12% of the population. The per capita income was $ 30,661 and 4.8% of the population was below the poverty line .

Palatine has a stop on the Union Pacific / Northwest Line of METRA , which ensures a daily service between Harvard and Chicago . The town is connected to Interstate 90 via Illinois State Route 53 , which provides a connection to O'Hare International Airport , 25 km southeast , the city of Chicago and other suburbs.
