Pareto ( Piedmontese and Ligurian Parèj ) is a municipality with 539 (as of December 31, 2019) inhabitants in the Italian province of Alessandria , Piedmont region . The neighboring municipalities are Cartosio , Giusvalla ( SV ), Malvicino , Mioglia ( SV ), Ponzone , Sassello ( SV ) and Spigno Monferrato .

geography

The place is located at an altitude of 476 m above sea level on a ridge between the river valleys of the Erro and the Bormida on an old trade route between the Mediterranean and the Po Valley . The municipality covers an area of ​​40.9 km² .

history

The place was founded in 991 together with the Abbey of San Quintino . From 1125 he was under the rule of the princes of Savona . In the following period the rulership changed between Genoa , Alessandria and Montferrat until the region fell to the Spanish in 1636. In 1713 the site comes as a result of the War of Succession to the Kingdom of Sardinia , it is part of the newly created province of Acqui . After a long period of peace among the Savoy , the place becomes the scene of dramatic battles during the first Napoleon campaign .
