Penzing is a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech .

The main town of Penzing is located about in the center of the community five kilometers northeast of Landsberg am Lech and 13 kilometers from Lake Ammersee .

history

Early history

The ending " -ing " of the place name testifies to the Germanic origin of the village. Belonging to Lechrain , on a moraine from the last Ice Age, the five villages of the municipality of Penzing are grouped in a semicircle around their center.

The Epfenhausen part of the municipality was first mentioned in a document around 1065. Oberbergen, which is one of the oldest development settlements in the Landsberg district, was founded in the 8th century. The oldest evidence of Ramsach is a document from the year 1179. Penzing and Untermühlhausen already existed when the Benediktbeuern monastery was founded around 740, which is evident from old records.

21st century

On January 4, 2009, a double murder was committed here, which became known in the media as the Penzing slurry murder.

Incorporations

In the course of the regional reform on January 1, 1971, the previously independent municipality of Oberbergen was incorporated. Untermühlhausen was added on April 1, 1971, Ramsach followed on January 1, 1972, and Epfenhausen on April 1, 1974.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2019 the municipality grew from 3,046 to 3,622 by 576 inhabitants or by 18.9%.

The A 96 motorway crosses the forested southeast of the municipality . This can be reached via State Road 2054 from Penzing to Landsberg am Lech and the AS 26 (Landsberg am Lech Ost).

The double-track, non-electrified Bavarian Allgäu Railway , which runs from Munich to Lindau (Lake Constance), runs through the Epfenhausen district. There was a train station in Epfenhausen with two platform tracks from 1873 to 1985.

Four bus lines run from Penzing to the train stations of Geltendorf , Kaufering , Mering and Landsberg .
