Plouguiel ( Breton : Priel ) is a French municipality with 1760 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Côtes-d'Armor in the region of Brittany .

geography

Plouguiel is only a few kilometers north of the canton capital Tréguier and is separated from it by the Guindy River . The western neighboring communities are Camlez and Penvénan , in the north and directly on the coast of the English Channel is Plougrescant . In the east - across the coastal river Jaudy - the communities of Pleumeur-Gautier and Kerbors join.

history

The place is first mentioned in the 13th century during the process of canonizing Ivo Hélory .

During the First World War, one of the first bases for seaplanes was set up in Plouguiel . From there, the reconnaissance and tracking of submarines in the English Channel was carried out. This base was operated by the French Navy until 1917 and then together with the US Navy until 1919 as the Center d'aviation maritime français et américain .

Population development

The community has seen little change in the number of residents since the beginning of the population record. Over 2 centuries, around 2,000 inhabitants were counted.

Personalities

The writer Jarl Priel (1885–1965) was born in Plouguiel. Alexander Calder (1898–1976), painter and sculptor, acquired the Palud house in Plouguiel in 1957 and stayed there regularly.
