history
The large number of preserved dolmens and menhirs indicates a long history of settlement. Penvénan was first mentioned in writing in the 12th century in a deed of donation to the Abbaye de Saint-Jacut .
On May 2, 1230 troops of the English King Henry III landed . in Port St. Gildas (today Port-Blanc) to Peter Mauclerc , the Duke of Brittany in his fight against the French King Louis IX. to support.
During the Revolution , Penvénan became the capital of the canton of the same name in 1790 and remained the administrative seat until 1801.
Population development
The parish recorded its maximum population in 1876 when 3,257 inhabitants were counted. Since the beginning of the 19th century, the number of residents has been determined to be relatively constant at around 2,500.
