Project X is an American comedy film from 2012. The found footage film is about the unpopular student Thomas and his friends who want to become more popular by throwing a party. However, this soon developed a considerable momentum of its own and finally got completely out of control.

action

The three friends Thomas, Costa and JB are considered to be written off losers at their high school in North Pasadena . So the three of them want to throw a party that should change that. That Thomas's parents are not there on his 17th birthday comes in handy. Costa takes over the coordination of the party. While Thomas is still imagining the party quietly, with a maximum of 50 visitors, Costa is already thinking on a larger scale. Dax, a somewhat strange classmate who visits a film group, is supposed to document the whole celebration and its coordination with a handheld camera. Costa takes care of promoting the party with word of mouth, chain mails and, as it turns out, an advertisement on Craigslist . Thomas also invites the attractive student Alexis and speaks to Kirby, his best friend, whom he keeps an eye on. The boys hire for the party DJs to buy alcohol and get T-Rick grass . In the process, they steal a garden gnome who is pointing finger at the finger and is supposed to serve as a mascot. Shortly afterwards, T-Rick notices the theft and follows the three of them, destroying the windshield of Thomas' van, which he recently received as a birthday present from his parents.

After initial worries that nobody would attend the party, more and more cars and people appear, until the height of the party almost 2,000 people are there. Thomas initially wanted to limit the party to the outside area of the house, but slowly he and the two teen security guys lose control over it. He is about to end the party when he sees Alexis and lets go of it. The party gets more and more out of control: First of all, the garden gnome, which is full of ecstasy pills, is destroyed. One of the neighbors gets angry and calls the police about disturbing the peace . However, since the music is briefly switched off and everyone in the back yard by the pool is quiet, the police officers leave. Alexis flirts with Thomas and when the two are about to have sex, Kirby appears. When she runs away disappointed, Thomas follows her. Meanwhile, a news channel found out about the party and reported about the party from a helicopter. Thomas' father's Mercedes is sunk in the pool and more police officers appear at the party. However, these are overwhelmed by the party guests.

The riot police then decide not to intervene until the party is over. But then T-Rick appears, who wants his ecstasy-filled garden gnome back. After he realizes that the pills it contains have all been consumed by the party guests, he burns the neighborhood down with a flamethrower in a rage. However, he is soon overpowered by the police, but the flamethrower tank explodes and Thomas 'parents' house catches fire. Thomas and his friends then run away while the house is being cleared by fire brigade helicopters.

When Thomas' parents come back, he is reprimanded. His college money will be used for repairs. However, the father is also surprised by his son. Until now he thought he was a loser who couldn't throw a big party because he had no friends.

The next day of school, Thomas, Costa and JB are received like heroes. Kirby, watching this, turns away in disgust. However, Thomas saves the relationship with her by explaining to her that he is sorry for everything and that he would like to celebrate his next birthday just with her. In the epilogue, we learn that Thomas was found guilty on six counts, but was declared by his classmates to be the person who will have the most success later in life. Costa was acquitted on all charges due to his expensive lawyer. JB's charges were dropped because his parents made it clear that he was "a particularly vulnerable person". Therefore he had to take the disabled bus for the rest of his school days. Dax was investigated because of the disappearance of his parents. The film ends with an interview between TV presenter Jillian Reynolds and Costa in which she tries to give him the opportunity to apologize. Instead, he announces his next party, to which he invites Reynolds with suggestive words.

background

Nima Nourizadeh's film debut was largely cast with unknown actors, who had their own names in the film to make the film more realistic. The film is loosely based on the case of 16-year-old Corey Delaney, who initially wanted to have a small party, but ended up with 500 party guests and which was ended by the police.

The found footage-style film , which was produced for $ 12 million, grossed over $ 100 million at box offices worldwide. Additionally, the film raised an additional $ 16 million with the DVD release.

Due to its financial success, Warner Bros. announced on March 6, 2012, four days after the appearance of Project X , that a sequel to the film was planned. Michael Bacall would write the script again. Bacall began work on the new script weeks before Project X was released . The producers Phillips and Silver have not yet made a decision about the implementation of the script.

Project X was the most illegally downloaded movie of the year in 2012 , with approximately 8.72 million downloads over the BitTorrent network .

Warner released a six-minute longer version on Blu-Ray under the title #XTENDEDCUT to the Break of Dawn, yo .

Reactions

Reviews

The film's reviews were divided. While some saw the film as the “ultimate party film”, others saw the film's lack of action as a major problem.

“In terms of content, 'Project X' turned out to be quite spartan, but director Nima Nourizadeh is all the more impressive with the pictures. The result is the absolute party apocalypse as well as simply the ultimate party film, which could hardly be more provocative, humorous and wacky. Anyone who likes anarchist and rough entertainment should not miss this wild party. "

- Thomas Repenning : Film-Panorama.de

“The main problem with 'Project X' is […] the lack of any tension. […] 'Project X' […] runs quite simply linearly - from the quiet beginning to the disaster. A film can hardly be more predictable. And no matter how crisp the soundtrack (with songs from Eminem to The Kills to Metallica) may be - a plot that can be exhaustively described in four words ('Party gets out of control') is simply not enough to to establish a good film. "

- Volker Probst : n-tv

“Project X will certainly only appeal to those who are also the explicit target group: teenagers and young adults who want to experience the most legendary party of all time. To what extent one can speak of a (possibly intended) learning effect towards the end, everyone has to decide for themselves. The strip itself is very unnecessary - especially in the cinema - but if you can enjoy it somewhere, it doesn't hurt as much as some other strip that takes itself seriously. "

Imitations

The film served as a template for several teenagers to organize mega parties themselves.

On March 9, 2012, the media in the US became aware of "Project M" when it was invited to the party by Mikey Vasovski, a high school student from Farmington Hills , Michigan , on Twitter . The invitation was forwarded to thousands of users until the message was forwarded once per second and also spread on other websites on the Internet. According to Vasovski, the party was to be called "Project M" and the invitation contained the address of a private residence where the party was to take place. Party-goers showed up at 9 a.m. on March 9th. However, the celebration was officially ended at 11 a.m. by the police, who sent all other guests away.

Another party was posted on Twitter on March 10, 2012. The party, which was organized by Canadian high school student Hunter Mills, was called "Project Kris". Within 24 hours of the first news of the party at Calgarian teenager Kris Morrey, more than 900,000 people had been watching the event. Morrey said the party was supposed to be held in a small group of 30 people before Mills interacted. Police later spoke to Morrey and his family, but Mills wanted to continue the party elsewhere.

On March 13, 2012 an attempt was made to hold two different parties in Miramar , Florida and Houston , Texas . In Miramar, high school student Christopher Dade planned a "Project X House Party 2" and invited people to the party via YouTube , Twitter and Craigslist. Dade was arrested and ordered to pay a $ 19,000 fine for property damage before the party even started. According to the police, forces had to send away more than 2,000 teenagers who, unaware of Dade's arrest and the breaking off of the celebration, entered the property and wanted to celebrate. In Houston, 13 teenagers were arrested after successfully throwing a party and causing over $ 100,000 in damage to an uninhabited home. When the teenagers were surveyed, they gave the film Project X as their motivation . A second Houston party drew between 500 and 1,000 guests after invitations were posted on Twitter and Facebook . When police came to end the party, one person was killed when a participant shot a gun.

On March 19, 2012 , four people were injured in Clearfield, Utah , when a shootout broke out in another "Project X" counterfeit. The party was hosted by 16-year-old Destiny McCubbin while her parents were out. McCubbin said in an interview, “My parents were out and I just wanted to throw a party. Every teenager does this. I never thought it would get out of hand. I just wanted everyone to have fun. ”Invitations were sent to 50 friends on Facebook, but it is estimated that 170 people attended the party.

On June 30, 2012, an imitation of Project X- es took place in the Plattenwald , Backnang , Germany . An unknown initiator started a Facebook event. The police moved in with a large number of emergency services, so that in the end there was a loss of 140,000 euros for the taxpayer. While around 20,000 people registered on Facebook, 1,000 people turned up in the end.

On July 7th, 2012 in Klosterneuburg , Austria two young people planned a party called Project Z, but the whole thing was called off by the police in advance, but shortly after the cancellation of the event on Facebook, strangers re-created the event. In the end, 700 young people were on the main street in front of the organizer's house and demonstrated loudly against the police march of 80 police officers.

Trivia

When the first guests arrive at the party, there is also a group of young women, whereupon JB says to Costa: "Hey, that's the one from Playboy". In fact, it is Anna Sophia Berglund , who really stood in front of the camera for Playboy in 2011 .
