Raban Graf von Westphalen (born December 17, 1945 in Helmern as Raban Josef Reichsgraf von Westphalen zu Fürstenberg ) is a German political scientist and has been a constitutional law teacher and professor of political science and public law since 1989 .

Graf von Westphalen is a son of the merchant Wilhelm Graf von Westphalen zu Fürstenberg (1907-1982) and the painter Aloysia " Wisa " Countess von Westphalen zu Fürstenberg (1910-1993) born. Freiin von Spiegel zu Peckelsheim .

After attending the local elementary school , he attended the St. Kaspar high school in Neuenheerse and later moved to the Landschulheim am Solling in Holzminden , where he passed his Abitur (old language branch). From 1964 to 1967 he trained as a skilled worker for PVC processing at the G. Leschus company ( Wuppertal ). In later years he worked independently for this company at home and abroad, most recently in 1982 in Baghdad / Iraq .

From 1967 to 1972, he completed a study of political science , history , law and geography in Münster , Bochum and Freiburg . In these subjects he passed the master's examination ( MA ) in 1972 . From 1973 to 1976 he was a full-time research assistant at the Federal-State Commission for Educational Planning and at the same time lecturer for educational and university policy at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Freiburg from 1974 to 1976 . He later worked there from 1976 to 1981 as a university assistant for scientific policy.

In 1978 the doctorate to Dr. phil. at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in the subjects of political science, history and geography (grade: summa cum laude ).

From 1981 von Westphalen worked as a freelancer for various research institutions, including a. for the Science Center Berlin , for the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and for the Institute of German Economy , as well as a lecturer at the University of Trier (political philosophy ), the University of Cologne ( government theory ) and the Cologne University of Applied Sciences (political sociology ).

From 1985 to 1987 he was a member of the Commission of Inquiry " technology assessment " of the German Bundestag from whose result of the Bundestag Committee for Technology Assessment emerged.

In 1989 he took over a professorship for political science / public law at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Berlin ( today : Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin ). From 1991 to 1993 he was also a lecturer at the University of Koethen . In 2011 he was age-related emeritus . Since 2011 he has been a lecturer at the political science faculty at the University of Erfurt . In the winter semester 2012/13 he had a Herder - endowed chair at the Kazakh-German University in Almaty / Kazakhstan held. From 2015 to 2017 also lecturer at the Beuth University in Berlin.

Graf von Westphalen was a member of the Großbodungen municipal council from 1999 to 2013 , and deputy chairman of the Free Voters of Thuringia from 2009 to 2014 , he also ran for the party in the Eichsfeld II constituency in the state elections in Thuringia in 2009 . He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Kreissparkasse Eichsfeld from 2011 to 2014 .

Together with his second wife Gerlinde Gräfin von Westphalen (born Sommer), he has organized art exhibitions as well as lecture and reading evenings at Burg Großbodungen since 1998 and from 2005 to 2018 in the castle's Kemenate Großbodungen .
