"I Hear the Birds on the Summer Breeze,
I Drive Fast, I am Alone at Midnight.
Been Tryin 'Hard Not to Get into Trouble,
But I, I've Got a War in My Mind.

So, I Just Ride, Just Ride,
I Just Ride, I Just Ride. "

- Refrain, original excerpt

“I hear the birds in the summer breeze,
I'm driving fast, I'm all alone at midnight.
Tried too hard not to get into trouble,
but I, I've got a war on my mind.

That's why I just drive, I just drive.
I just drive, just drive. "

- Refrain, translation

Music video

The music video begins with Del Rey rocking on a tire against the backdrop of a rocky landscape. Shortly afterwards, Del Rey says: "I was in the winter of my life and the men I met along the road were my only summer" (I was in the winter of my life and the men I met on the street were my only summer ). She goes on to tell how she found refuge in travel because she did not have a real home for a long time after touring. She says that her dreams as a poet were shattered and that ultimately the doors opened for a career as a singer. After this confession, Del Rey can be seen riding a motorcycle parade through the desert. In other scenes she is wrapped in a US flag. Dressed as an Indian, she celebrates a party around the campfire with the biker gang. Towards the end there is another story by Del Rey. She explains: “I am fucking crazy. But I am free ”(I'm fucking crazy, but I'm free). The video ends with a quick cut of the most important scenes, followed by the opening scene.

Reviews

MTV described Ride as a "slow fire" and as "as smooth and comforting" as their debut. A second MTV review wrote that she sang about what she knows best: alcohol addiction, loneliness, and some daddy issues. All of this is probably a metaphor for something, but to be honest, we're still trying to figure out what this Born to Die fable means. In a third MTV review, Ride was voted “Must Hear” song of the week. Furthermore, MTV sees similarities between Ride by Del Rey and Brandon Flowers album Flamingo .

Stereogum's Tom Breihan said Ride Del Rey led back to the strength of video games and blue jeans . At the same time he puts her in an Adele crossover soul pop corner. It is really beautiful and "there is still hope for this woman".

Lucy Jones of the New Musical Express compared Del Rey's role in Ride to Blanche Dubois in Endstation Sehnsucht . She calls it a "neurasthenic wreck". She also reflects on a lolita complex , Del Rey's character atrophied in prostitution , in the search for security in other people. The video is consistently discriminatory for women. Del Rey reflects young women’s acceptance of sex for sale for a roof over their heads. That could be understood as a kind of anti-feminism . Jones also makes a comparison between the Ride and Born to Die videos . In particular through the following recurring scenes: bright red fingernails, red Converse , upside-down crucifix earrings, flag of the United States , tattoos and weapons . Jones speculated that the monologue was not autobiographical, but that it was a swipe at her critics.
