Rieger (family name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rieger is a German family name .

origin

There are several theories of origin for this name:

  • Rieger can be a name of origin for the places Riegen, Rieger and Riege u. Ä. be. Someone who came from the town of Riegen , for example , was then a "Rieger" at the new place of residence.
  • On the other hand, Rieger can also be a patronymic of the nickname Rüdiger (contracted form "Rüger"). The name comes from the Old High German hruod-gêr and is a combination of 'fame' and 'spear'.
  • Rüger, on the other hand, is also a professional name which means the judge or prosecutor (cf. the terms “reprimand someone” or the “reprimand”). The Middle High German ruegaere or rüeger means something like " blasphemer , scoundrel, accuser" or court-appointed "show-off".
  • There could also be a connection to the early New High German word ruge , which means "rest".
  • “Riegerlein” also describes a type of water bird. And such birds do actually appear in one or the other Rieg (g) er coat of arms.
