Rio 2 is an American animated family film in 3D from Blue Sky Studios and was produced in co-production with 20th Century Fox and directed by Carlos Saldanha . The film is the sequel to Rio and thus the first sequel to an animated film outside of the Ice Age series at Blue Sky Studios . The Aras known from the first film Rio Blu and Jewel live with their offspring in Rio de Janeiro and experience the rainforest on the Amazon adventure, while Brazil to the 2014 FIFA World Cup prepared.

action

After the Spix's Macaw Blu in Rio were from Minnesota to Rio de Janeiro brought and had escaped with his conspecific Jewel in the freedom to live the two macaws in Rio and started a family. While Blu and the three children are convinced of the advantages of human civilization such as pancakes and television, Jewel prefers a species-appropriate lifestyle. When the news reports about Blu's owner Linda and her husband Tulio, who have spotted traces of other Spix's macaws in the Amazon rainforests, Jewel convinces the family to go there too. Their friends Rafael, Nico and Pedro, who are looking for new talent for a carnival show, join them.

Blus old adversary, the yellow-hooded cockatoo Nigel, is meanwhile shown as a fortune-telling bird at a fair. After he lost most of his feathers in the last confrontation with Blu, he can no longer fly and seeks revenge. When he sees the macaw family on their way to the Amazon, he frees himself from captivity and goes into pursuit. He is accompanied by an anteater and poison dart frog Gabi. She is in love with Nigel and feels like him as an outsider, believing that she cannot touch anyone without killing him.

Once in the rainforest, Blu and his family meet a large colony of their own kind, which is hidden from people here. To Jewels great joy, her father Eduardo, who was believed to be dead, is one of them. She and the children settle in very quickly in the colony and soon there is no longer any talk of returning to Rio. Blu, on the other hand, feels increasingly excluded. He sticks to the achievements of civilization such as sat-nav, pocket knife and fanny pack and is not accepted by his father-in-law, who sees him as a pet that may cooperate with the human enemy. In addition, the sporty and gallant Roberto courted his former childhood friend Jewel. When Blu comes across enemy territory of Scarlet Macaws in search of a Brazil nut for Jewel , he violates an agreement between the two bird colonies. In the subsequent sporting competition for the territory, the Spix's macaws lose through Blus' fault, which makes Eduardo's reputation even lower.

Nevertheless, Blu decides to adapt to life in the jungle for the sake of Jewel and to renounce his connection to humans. He flies to Linda and Tulio's camp to say goodbye. He notices a destroyed radio and finally finds the two researchers tied to a tree, from which he frees them. It turns out that a criminal hired a group of workers to illegally cut trees in the birds' habitat and to take out the disturbing bird conservationists. While the otherwise brave Roberto completely loses his nerve in the face of the threat, Blu takes command and leads the macaws into the fight against the woodcutters. They manage to drive them away, with the support of the scarlet macaws as well as Linda and Tulio, whom Eduardo now recognizes as friends.

Nigel, who has crept into the ara colony disguised as a carnival actor, sees the fight with the loggers as an opportunity to take revenge. However, he does not succeed in killing Blu with a poison arrow from Gabi, instead he is later accidentally hit by it himself. Desperate, Gabi also swallows her poison to die by his side. But both survive and it turns out that the frogess was lied to by her parents about her toxicity. Now she can finally be close to her crush Nigel and takes advantage of this against his will. The headstrong couple is brought back to town for further exploration. Blu and his family stay in the rainforest, with Jewel suggesting they go on vacation to Rio.

reception

The film review by kino.de is positive overall. The graphic of Rio 2 is particularly praised , the jungle as the main location enables a "intoxicating festival of colors". The number of gags is also very high, such as the scenes with the Shakespeare quoting cockatoo Nigel. However, some things are not new, but borrowed from other films, so the problem between Blu and Eduardo reminds me of my bride, her father and me . The eco message from Rio 2 looks lightly applied.

Criticism that also Filmstarts reviewer Andreas Staben shares. In addition, he judges Rio 2 to be a bit too hectic and overloaded. His conclusion is that the film "has a lot to offer for the eyes and ears, but next to almost every successful gag and every rousing musical number there is an unnecessary subplot and an allusion that runs into nothing."
