Robert Müller (born November 12, 1986 in Schwerin , GDR ) is a German football player who can be used in defense as a right-back or central defender as well as in the defensive midfield . He has been under contract with Energie Cottbus since January 2019 .
Career
Youth in Mecklenburg, Anhalt and Berlin
Müller began his football career in his hometown with ESV Schwerin and FSV Schwerin , before he moved to Halleschen FC as a youth . In Halle he also attended the sports high school in Halle / Saale before he moved to Hertha BSC in Berlin in the summer of 2001 and initially continued his school career at the Poelchau sports school .
For Hertha, Müller first played as a B-youth in the U-17 regional league , in which the team won the season's championship in both 2002 and 2003. In the final rounds for the B-Juniors championship reached in this way , Hertha initially failed in the quarter-finals in 2002 against the later title holder FC Schalke 04 , but was able to move into the final in 2003 and defeat VfB Stuttgart . Subsequently, Müller moved up to the club's A-youth team, which took part in the newly created U-19 Bundesliga in 2003/04 as a founding member . In this, however, Hertha only finished second in their season and thus missed the final round of the A-Juniors championship , with Müller having played a total of 25 games for Berlin. In the DFB Cup of the A-Juniors , however, the team reached the final of the 2003/04 season and won it against SGV Freiberg .
Through his achievements in the youth competitions, Müller had also drawn the attention of the German Football Association to himself, so that on September 16, 2003 he competed for the German U-18 team for the first time and scored a goal in the friendly against Bulgaria . After a total of five games for the U-18s, Müller then moved up to the U-19 selection in the summer of 2004 , for which he initially scored one goal in ten missions by June 2005. In July 2005, Müller then took part in the U-19 selection at the 2005 European Championships in Northern Ireland , where he completed another four appearances in the national jersey; However, the team was eliminated in the semifinals against eventual title winners France .
Beginnings at Hertha BSC
Meanwhile, Müller had only played eleven games for Hertha in the 2004/05 season of the U-19 Bundesliga, since he had already been promoted to the men's teams in Berlin from spring 2005. For example, instead of playing for the A-youth, which eventually became champions of their season without Müller and thus took part in the German championship, more and more often for Hertha's reserve team in the third-class regional league . Overall, Müller came there during the second half of the 2004/05 season to ten missions, where he scored his first competitive goal on May 22, 2005. Subsequently, Müller also belonged to the Berlin reserve team according to his age, so that he played another 65 regional league appearances in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons, whereby he had also been able to recommend himself for the Hertha first team coached by Falko Götz from summer 2006 . His debut for this in the Bundesliga on November 25 of the 2006/07 season , however, was also his only appearance for Hertha in the top German division. Even in the youth national teams of the DFB, Müller was no longer able to assert himself permanently during this time, so that he only played four games for the U-20s from 2005 to 2006 and only two games for the U-21s at the beginning of 2007 before his national team career finally ended.
Third class with Jena and Kiel
Since Müller did not see enough chance of further appearances in the Bundesliga in Berlin, he moved to FC Carl Zeiss Jena in summer 2007 , who played in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2007/08 season . There Müller established himself under the coach Frank Neubarth initially as a regular player until the relegation-threatened club used Valdas Ivanauskas as a new coach in September 2007 , after which Müller was only used sporadically. After the renewed change of coach to Henning Bürger in the spring of 2008, Müller was again one of the regulars in the Jena team, which, however, no longer achieved relegation and was relegated to the newly founded 3rd division in the 2008/09 season.
Despite the relegation, Müller signed a new contract with the Thuringians in June 2008, which was initially limited to one year, but would have been automatically extended for another year in the event of direct re-promotion. Instead of playing for promotion, Jena found itself in the relegation battle and was only able to secure relegation on the last matchday of the season. Müller then moved in June 2009 to the third division promoted Holstein Kiel , where he initially signed a contract dated 2011. However, since Kiel was immediately relegated again in the 2009/10 season, this contract lost its validity in the summer of 2010.
Via Rostock to Wiesbaden and Aalen
In FC Hansa Rostock , Müller found a new employer who had previously been relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga to the 3rd division and now signed two players from Kiel, Müller and Peter Schyrba .
In Rostock, too, Müller developed into a regular player during the first half of the 2010/11 season, although Rostock coach Peter Vollmann was used alternately in defense or midfield, but was ultimately involved in 35 of the 38 season games. Due to the immediate return to second place in the final table this season, Müller's contract was automatically extended for another year until summer 2013. In addition, Hansa also won the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Cup this season , to which Müller had contributed with four appearances.
In the 2011/12 second division season , Müller remained a regular in the team initially coached by Vollmann, but then by Wolfgang Wolf in the second half of the season , so that he made a total of 28 appearances over the course of the season. At the end of the season, however, Rostock rose as bottom of the table back into the 3 league, whereby Müller's contract with Hansa lost its validity. As a result, Müller did not accept another contract offer by Hansa.
In May 2012, Müller instead signed a two-year contract with SV Wehen Wiesbaden , where he played again under Peter Vollmann in the 3rd division in 2012/13 and also met his former Rostock teammate Michael Wiemann . In the summer of 2015, Müller signed a two-year contract with third division club VfR Aalen .
Third division promoted Uerdingen and Cottbus
On May 28, 2018, the third division promoted KFC Uerdingen 05 announced the commitment of the central defender. After only two competitive appearances for Krefeld, co-promoted Energie Cottbus signed the central defender in January 2019.
