Rothenberg was a municipality-free area in the Main-Spessart district until 2013 .

On January 1, 2014, the 5.18 km² (exactly 5,176,114 m²) area around the southern slope of the Rothenberg , which made up the largest part of the area, was incorporated into the municipality of Rechtenbach . This increased the area of ​​the municipality more than three times. In addition, the two separate areas of the previous municipality were connected by the integrated area. Rothenberg is now a district within the municipality of Rechtenbach.

The area consists of nine historical forest divisions named by name, which largely correspond to current parcels , starting in a clockwise direction in the northwest:
