background

In an interview with The Capital FM Network in March 2011, producer Shea Taylor stated, "The first single is huge and will premiere in late April." Run the World was written by Knowles and The-Dream and produced by Knowles, Switch and Taylor. On April 14, 2011, two excerpts of the song were posted on the Internet . A demo recording of Run the World (Girls) made it onto the Internet on April 18, 2011.

Run the World (Girls) had its radio premiere in the US on April 21, 2011 and was released worldwide for download on the same day .

After Knowles received the Millennium Award from Billboard magazine in May 2011 for her career and influence on the music industry, Knowles gave an interview for the magazine about her career as a solo artist and about her fourth album spoke. To Run the World Knowles said:

“It's definitely riskier than something ... easier. I just listened to the song and loved it, it was so different: it feels a little bit African, a little bit electronic and futuristic. It reminds me of what I love, which is mixing different cultures and eras - things that normally don't go together - to create a new sound. I can never be sure; I just try. Soon I accomplished one thing and set myself higher goals next. That's how I became successful and influential and became what I am. "

Composition and content

Run the World is characterized by a mixture of synth pop and R&B elements and contains reminiscences of Michael Jackson's "early" works. Run the World samples the beat of Major Lazers and Vybz Kartel's Pon De Floor from 2009. In addition, the break in the song was described as "disgusting".

Run the World begins with a keyboard melody and a “club beat”. Then Knowles begins to sing: “Girls! / We run this mutha / Girls! / Who run the world. “Knowles sings again with a staccato singing style as in her previous works. Before the refrain, Knowles praises the women by singing: “smart enough to make these millions, strong enough to bare the children, then get back to business”.

The song ends with a fade-out of Knowles' vocals.

criticism

Amos Barshad of New York Magazine described Run the World as "some kind of monster - aggressive, intense and very engaged". He called the song "meaningful" ("declarative").

Music video

The music video for Run the World was directed by Francis Lawrence, who previously directed Destiny's Childs Independent Women (2000) and Emotion (2001). Knowles worked with eight different choreographers on the music video, as well as with 200 African dancers who also appear in the music video. The dancers taught Knowles some African dances that are used in the music video. Behind the scenes, critics suspect that the music video will focus on the choreographies. The music video was shot in part in the Mojave Desert , California . Other scenes in the video were shot in Inglewood . Some images of the music video were posted on the Internet on April 12, 2011 and show Knowles in a war zone , wearing a gladiator outfit with a gold crown and waving a red flag with a "B" logo. She is surrounded by the other dancers. On April 20, 2011, a teaser of the music video was released.

In an interview with MTV News , director Francis Lawrence said of the music video: “It's going to be great, possibly the best video Beyoncé has ever made. I can say the song is amazing. ”The music video was shot from April 11th to April 13th, 2011. He compared the music video to the video for Lady Gaga's Bad Romance (2009), which Lawrence also directed.
