history

Home club SC Kleve 63

The Sportclub Kleve 1863 e. V. emerged in 1924 from the football division of TV Cleve in 1863 and adopted its own name in 1925. The football department of TV Cleve 1863 was in turn created by the joining of the Club for Youth and Folk Games Cleve in 1919. The club for youth and folk games Cleve itself emerged from the 1917 merger between FC 1906 Cleve and the game club 1909 Cleve to form FC Hohenzollern Cleve .

The SC Kleve 63 played in 1949/50 and 1951/52 in the third-class amateur league Niederrhein Group I, from 1954 to 1956 in the amateur league Niederrhein II. When he finished sixth in 1956, he was transferred to the single-track amateur league Niederrhein, from which he was relegated in 1960 , from 1961 but belonged again. From this came 1964 again the descent into the fourth division. 1969 to 1971 was the last time he returned to the amateur league.

Main club VfB Lohengrin 03 Kleve

The club was founded in 1903 as VfB 03 Cleve . The founders were mainly employees of the local van den Bergh margarine works . This earned the club the nickname "de Botter". On October 16, 1910, the first international football match on German soil between Germany and Holland took place on the club's own sports field on Triftstrasse . With financial support from the General Director of Margarinewerke, VfB 03 Cleve had a 1,000-seat roofed grandstand built. Between 5,000 and 10,000 spectators saw Germany lose 2-1. The "Clever Kreisblatt" commented: "The German side played fairly, which unfortunately cannot always be said of the Dutch".

In 1920 the VfB 03 Cleve merged with the Merkur Kleve gymnastics club and the Clever Schwimm-Sportclub to create a club for gymnastics and movement games . In 1921 the club was renamed VfB 03 Cleve , from 1925 the place name was written Kleve . After the Second World War , VfB Lohengrin 03 Kleve was founded in 1946 through a merger with SuL Kleve (merger between VfB Lohengrin 1921 Kleve and FC Sparta 1921 Kleve in 1936). The VfB Lohengrin 03 Kleve played from 1950 to 1955 in the third class amateur league Niederrhein II (best placement 1953 with 4th place) and from 1960 to 1963 in the third class amateur league Niederrhein (best placement 1961 with 7th place).

After the merger

In 2000 the SC 63 Kleve merged with VfB Kleve 03 to form 1. FC Kleve. Jürgen Hoffmann, who had previously looked after VfB for two years, was the first coach of the fusion club. After the missed national league championship in the first year, Horst Riege followed him to the coaching chair, who led the club into the association league in 2001/02, but was replaced as coach by Fred Bockholt in the summer . Under Bockholt, the club reached the new championship and the march into the Oberliga Nordrhein . Up until the 2007/08 season, the football team of 1. FC Kleve played in the fourth-class league. As a promoted team, they played in the 2008/09 season under coach Arie van Lent in the Regionalliga West, which was also fourth-class due to the introduction of the 3rd division, but from which they immediately relegated to the now fifth-class NRW-League . On February 28, 2009 coach Arie van Lent was dismissed due to the sporting failure (18th place in the Regionalliga West ). His successor was the 46-year-old soccer teacher Georg Kress.

On December 18, 2010, the club announced that it was withdrawing its first team from playing in the NRW League due to financial problems. Thus, the team was already determined prematurely as relegated from the league. On March 11, 2011, the association filed for bankruptcy at the Kleve District Court. The reason for this was the received demands from the city for the immediate repayment of the subsidies for the stadium construction as well as the tax assessments for the years 2005-2008, the amount of which was agreed not to disclose. For the 2011/12 season 1. FC Kleve started again under coach Sebastian Kaul in the Lower Rhine regional league and took over the place of the second team that was transferred to the regional league. For the second half of the season, Thomas von Kuczkowski took over as coach of the first team.

On February 25, 2013 the bankruptcy proceedings were lifted by the Kleve District Court. In terms of sport, the team only missed the championship in season 2 of the Lower Rhine regional league in the 2014/15 season because of the worse goal difference compared to 1. FC Mönchengladbach . The 2015/16 season could also be finished as runner-up. In the promotion relegation to the Oberliga Niederrhein , 1. FC Kleve failed at Cronenberger SC (1-0, 0-4).

After the 2016/17 season ended unsatisfactorily with 7th place in the table and the team was even in last place in the table, Thomas von Kuczkowski left the club. He was succeeded by Umut Akpinar, who ended his career as a Klever veteran in 2014/15 and then worked as the coach of the 2nd team. Under the new coach, the Klever played strongly and on matchday 30 of the 2017/18 season secured the championship of the Lower Rhine regional league ahead of time with a 4-0 home win against FSV Duisburg and thus promotion to the Niederrhein Oberliga .
