The Seniors World Chess Championship is a tournament organized by FIDE since 1991 . The organizer of the first and other senior world championships was Reinhold Hoffmann (ChessOrg), thanks also to the fact that the senior world champion receives the title of grandmaster.

Overview

In 1997 Reinhold Hoffmann received the honor plate of the German Chess Federation from Egon Ditt , the then President of the German Chess Federation in recognition of his services to senior chess. In 1998 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit. In July 2006 he died of a serious illness.

Men and women originally played in a joint tournament. Only later was there a separate championship for women, although women were still allowed to play in the men's tournament. The minimum age was 60 years for men until 2013 (reference date January 1 of the game year), for women the minimum age is 50 years. The minimum age has been 50 since 2014, and another world championship with the minimum age of 65 will be held. The Senior World Championship will be held as an open tournament with 11 rounds according to the Swiss system . Since 1997, winning the title has been linked to the award of the men's grandmaster title . The female winner receives the title Woman Grandmaster ("Grand Master of Women").
