In the 13th century, the brothers of the Franciscan order founded by Francis of Assisi in 1210 ( Ordo fratrum minorum "Friars Minor Order") settled in Graz on the site of today's Franciscan monastery . After the tribal order split into conventuals (now called "Minorites") and observants as a result of the poverty dispute in the order in 1517 , the monastery fell to the observants. After many provisional years, the Minorites were finally able to settle at today's Mariahilfer Platz (in today's Lend district ) through a gift from Prince von Eggenberg and Emperor Ferdinand II . The church, built in baroque style in 1607 according to plans by Giovanni Pietro de Pomis , a student of Tintoretto , was completed in 1611. He built a towerless church based on Venetian models, which was closed at the top with a triangular gable in the style of classic temple fronts. A reconstruction based on plans by Josef Hueber gave the church its current shape with the two towers from 1742 to 1744. The church has served as a parish church since 1783 .

The gable above the church portal is now crowned by a baroque statue of the Archangel Michael , who throws Lucifer into hell. The other figures of the portal show the religious saints Francis of Assisi and Anthony of Padua to the side above the middle door and the Virgin Mary above the door .

The interior of the church looks simple and serious. The large dome over the presbytery and the stucco decoration were removed in 1769. The frescoes created by Josef Adam Mölk afterwards were also removed (after less than 100 years) and gave way to today's simple design. The image of the Virgin Mary on the high altar is considered to be Pietro de Pomis' main pictorial work.

The sacristy , built in 1636/37, has rich stucco ornamentation ( attributed to Johann Cajetan Androy ,) and régence style stalls ; the sacristy also houses the Bonaventura chapel (baptistery for St. Bonaventure , Triebenegg's crypt chapel) , 1635 to Built in 1640, with stucco in the cartilage style by Mathias Camin , the master of Mariazell , and a high baroque altar in stucco marble .

To the south of the church is the cloister of the Minorite monastery, to which the treasury chapel adjoins. This was created from 1769 to 1771 to receive votive offerings from pilgrims, none of which have survived. It is closed in late Baroque style, the furnishings, in particular the altarpiece, are from the time it was made, the walls and vaulted caps are adorned with miraculous scenes in tone-on-tone painting by Joseph Adam Ritter von Mölk  (1773).

A representative staircase leads through another courtyard to the former summer refectory (the Minoritensaal ), one of the most beautiful profane baroque rooms in Graz.

In a storm around 2005, a cross with a halo and knob fell on the forecourt without hitting anyone. This was followed by the renovation of the two tower roofs, the crosses - lifted in by truck crane - were again aligned parallel to the main portal of the church. A few weeks later the vortices of a storm twisted a cross, and only many months later the second.

On Thanksgiving Sunday, September 29, 2019, 12 bells cast in 2019 at Perner in Passau will be presented for a new carillon at the Mariensäule on Lendplatz.

Todays use

The monastery buildings are still inhabited by Friars Minorites to this day. The monastery is also home to the Minorite Culture Center , where events from the fields of music, literature and visual arts take place.

In addition, services of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic community , a Rome-Uniate community, and the Russian-Orthodox parish for the protection of Mary in Graz , as ecumenical accommodation, take place in the treasury chapel of the monastery .

The interior and exterior of the Mariahilferkirche has been extensively restored in recent years.
