Around 1100 the Counts of Fenis acquired the place and began to fortify it. Burkhart von Fenis built the castle at the beginning of the 12th century. Erlach was an important base for the Counts of Neuchâtel . Around 1265 Erlach received the hand-fest from Count Rudolf II of Neuchâtel-Nidau . As ministerials to the counts, the knights of Erlach served as castle men at the castle.
In 1474 Erlach fell to Bern and the castle became the seat of the Bernese governor . Among the governors at Erlach Castle were well-known personalities such as Niklaus Manuel Deutsch (governor 1523–1528) and Johann Rudolf Sinner von Ballaigues (governor 1776–1781). From 1874 the castle was a state education home.
Erlach Castle is owned by the Canton of Bern. The castle currently houses an educational institution for normally gifted, mostly school-age children and adolescents with learning difficulties who are in critical life situations.
