Wildenberg Castle

The castle Wildberg , rebuilt in Nachmittelalter into a baroque castle, is the most prominent building in the ancient village of Zernez . It was the seat of the Zernezer family Planta.

location

The palace complex is located on the eastern edge of the old part of the village Runatsch, which, in contrast to the rest of the village, was spared the great village fire in 1872 with the Protestant parish church and the Catholic chapel of St. Sebastian.

investment

The oldest part of the complex is the square tower, which was probably built in the 13th century. The wide window openings in the basement were subsequently broken into. The key notches on the upper floors date from around 1630, the curved pointed hood from the 18th century, the interior and roof from the 17th century. The two baroque wings of the palace adjoin it at an angle. They have no military character and go back to a new building from 1622. Alterations were made in 1649 and in the second half of the 18th century. The castle is surrounded by a courtyard and two gardens.

history

The complex is not documented as a medieval castle, but numerous possessions of the Lords of Tarasp and Lords of Frickingen are documented for the 12th century in Zernez, and numerous farms of the barons of Sagogn - Wildenberg with Wildenberg Castle (Falera) in the 13th century the Surselva , which were transferred to the diocese of Chur and in the 14th century to the Zuoz family von Planta . From one of these courtyards, transferred to the bishop before 1298 and to Conrad Planta in 1302, the Wildenberg-Planta Castle emerges. In 1377 a farm located in the Sarnetz area called Wildenberg is mentioned. subsequently a branch of the Planta was called "von Planta-Wildenberg". The Zernezer Plantas also operated the iron ore mines on the nearby Ofen Pass .

During the Grisons turmoil , as the prelude to the Thusner criminal court , a large part of the castle, the residence of Rudolf von Plantas at that time, was stormed and destroyed by the Engadine population by digging under the walls in 1618, as Rudolf Archduke Leopold of Austria, loyal to Habsburg, was on his Castle should have received. As the commander of Austrian troops, Rudolf von Planta forced the Engadinians to rebuild with a new residential wing in 1622. With Rudolf's death the castle went to the Planta- Steinsberg family .

Johann von Planta was instrumental in the ransom of the Lower Engadine villages from the Habsburg rule, which was carried out in 1652. He had the castle refurbished and lived in it from 1645, the entrance portal still shows his coat of arms. In the middle and end of the 18th century, Johann Heinrich von Planta and Peter von Planta had numerous conversions and extensions carried out, which shape the appearance of Wildenberg-Planta Castle today. Peter Conradin von Planta sold the castle to the Bezzola family after 1850. Since 1956 it has belonged to the municipality of Zernez, which had it rebuilt until 1957 and housed its parish hall in it. In 2007 the Swiss National Park finally moved into the castle, which has since been home to the entire administration of the park.
