The place is about 20 kilometers west of Vöcklabruck , and 10 kilometers east of Straßwalchen , directly on the Salzburg border. The Hausruck-und-Kobernaußerwald-Zug rises to the north, while the Mondsee Flysch Mountains of the Salzkammergut Mountains lie to the south .

The village of Schwaigern is located 2½ kilometers west of Frankenmarkt directly on the left bank of the Vöckla at around 540  m above sea level. A. Höhe, where its upper course comes from the Mondsee area from the south and then turns to the east. The Weinbach flows to the north of the village and the Eisbach to the west , both of which come from the pass landscape to Straßwalchen. To the south, the Nössenbach flows into the Vöckla. The Langholz forest area lies on Eisbach and Weinbach .

The municipality capital Kirchham-Pöndorf is 2 kilometers to the northeast, and Weißenkirchen is a good 4 kilometers as the crow flies to the southeast.

The Pöndorf village has almost 50 buildings with around 140 residents. On the other side of Vöckla is directly adjacent to Rudlberg , a village of Frankenmarkt.

Schwaigern is also the name of some scattered houses from the Nössenbach and the substation south of the village, on the right along the Vöckla. These form a separate village , including the hamlet of Hofbauer, and belong to Weißenkirchen im Attergau. There are 11 buildings with around 25 residents: they have the address Vöcklatal .

As a result, the Schwaigern location includes all houses to the right of the Vöckla for a good 3 kilometers, more than 60 buildings with over 150 residents.

Geology, history and infrastructure

Schwaigern is located on the high terrace of the Riss-Kaltzeitlichen glacier foreland , while the valley floor is the Vöckla low terrace . This last advance of the Irrsee glacier of the Dachstein glacier , around 300,000 and 100,000 years ago , probably did not reach here ( terminal moraines about above at Zagling , Volkerding and Obermühlham ), the other side of the Vöcklatal as well as the foot of the Kobernaußerwald, however, are moraines of the more than 400,000 year old mighty Mindel glacier advance. Eisbach and Weinbach are typical apron waters that meander through the moraine landscape to the southwest above.

The place name comes from Middle High German  sweige 'farm for cattle farming', a type of settlement that emerged in the High Middle Ages (12th / 13th centuries). The first documentary mention is Svaigarn 1145/46.

Georg Matthäus Vischer recorded the place Shwaigern as early as 1667 in his map Archiducatus Austriae Superioris Geographica Descriptio and gives here the fons Vogglae ('source of the Vöckla', the upper Vöckla is called Spentzl river ). This probably means the Eisbach . The location of the place quite high up on the stream suggests that the whole scattered location is meant.

Today's Wiener Straße  (B1) runs directly north of the village , an important long-distance connection since at least Roman times. Until 1787 this was the border region between Austria and Bavaria , and until 1803 it became the sovereign archbishopric of Salzburg . Until the end of the 18th century, the road ran directly over the village of Schwaigern (the road from the railway bridge on the Vöckla and then straight towards Weingarten ).

The division of the local situation is quite old, here on the lower Nössenbach ran the border of the regional courts Frankenburg ( Hausruck area ) and Kogl ( Attergau with southern Attersee, seat in the castle of St. Georgen ). The Salzburg regional court on the Höchfeld (Straßwalchener area) took hold of cabinet tree over the Vöckla, which marks the southern end of Schwaigern. The Franciscan cadastre around 1830 then gives a good 15 houses for the village, south of the Schwaiger Wiesen and the farmsteads Scheider am Holz (Vöcklatal No. 20), Hofbauer  (No. 23) and two Retbauer  (No. 31 and 30). The stream to the north is called Angerbach (today unclear Weinbach or Kirchhamerbach ).

In 1860 the kk  Kaiserin Elisabeth-Bahn (Westbahn) was opened here, it passes the place between the stops Frankenmarkt and Pöndorf .

Until 1951 the village of Schwaigern belonged to Frankenmarkt , after a referendum the village was incorporated into the municipality of Pöndorf.

In the Vöcklatal the L1281  Vöcklatalstraße runs from the B1 over the Haslau to the B154 near Zell am Moos . After Weißenkirchen there is only a bad transport connection via side roads, which is why you drive via Frankenmarkt.

  5. It is presumably not the Nössenbach and its source streams at Kogler Berg and Schoibernberg , these are marked as Rabenshwentner huet and Pergerhuet significantly further south. The inflow to Weinbach / Kirchhamerbach, not to Vöckla, is also clear.
  6. The Vischer map is quite precise here for the other locations of Hehenfeld (Hochfeld) , Waitznroit (probably Winzerroid ) and Perntal (abandoned house near eingarten ).
