The Scottish Football League Division Three was played for the first time in 1923/24 . It was the first of three preliminary seasons of Division Three as the third highest Scottish league . It was discontinued in 1926 and only set up again in a different form in 1946.

In the 1923/24 season, 16 clubs competed against each other in a total of 30 match days. Each team played twice against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal quotient counted . The championship was won by FC Arthurlie from Barrhead , which together with the table runner-up FC East Stirlingshire secured promotion to the Division Two season 1924/25 .
