The Senate ( Senatul ) was the Constitution of 1991 as the upper chamber (upper house) of the Romanian Parliament created. The Senate thus follows the tradition of the Senate of Greater Romania, which existed between 1919 and 1940 .

The members are elected for four years by a combined direct and proportional representation. The last election took place in 2016 . The Senate has 136 members. Following the resignation of Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu ( ALDE ), his deputy Șerban Valeca ( PSD ) has been the temporary chairman since September 2, 2019 . Teodor Meleșcanu, supported by the PSD and Alina Gorghiu from the liberal-conservative PNL, are proposed for election .
